NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped a 56-43 final to Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon in NESCAC action at Luce Field House.
Wesleyan (6-9 overall) picked up its first conference win of the season thanks to a balanced scoring attack and stout rebounding. Tori DaCosta (Bronx, N.Y.) and Madi Gomez (Lakeville, Conn.) netted nine points apiece to lead the Cardinals, and the former grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to secure a double-double.
Abby Ilusorio (San Diego, Calif.) paced the Camels with a career-high 11 points and added five rebounds and an assist. Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) tacked on nine points and eight rebounds while Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) grabbed a team-high nine boards to go with four points.
Midway through the opening quarter, The Cardinals used an 8-0 run to gain early separation. Gomez buried a pair of threes during the stretch, which left the visitors with a 10-3 advantage with 3:23 left in the period.
Wesleyan led by seven after the first quarter and outscored Conn 21-10 in the second. Olivia Quinn (Franklin, Mass.) came off the bench to score all six of her points in the stanza, and the Cardinals took a 33-15 lead into the break. Gomez led all scorers with nine points at intermission, all of which came from beyond the arc.
The visitors stretched the lead to as many as 19 in the second half and never let the Camels back in the game. Wesleyan shot 38 percent for the contest and held a 47-41 edge on the glass.
Conn College (4-11 overall, 0-4 NESCAC) returns to action at Pratt Institute on Thursday, January 19 at 6:30 p.m.
