Women’s Basketball Push Win-Streak to Five Against Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team traveled to Houghton University, on Friday evening to compete against Houghton University in an Empire 8 matchup. The Cardinals had a dominant game, winning 81-32 against the Highlanders. After this game, Fisher increases their overall record to 9-2, winning five games in a row and remaining undefeated in the Empire 8 at 4-0.

 

The Cardinal's first quarter was slow to start, with Sidney Tomasso picking up the first layup of the game after more than two minutes in. Claire Kruszka increased Fisher's lead with a good free throw. Shortly after, a steal by Kaitlyn Walker led to Katie Moravec scoring a layup. Nearly three minutes went by before Presleigh Brunner scored the next layup of the game, pushing the Cardinal's lead to 7-0. The Cardinals continued to pick up the pace, pushing their run to 18-0, thanks to a good layup by Tomasso near the end of the first quarter. A perfect quarter would see the Cardinals leading 18-0.

 

Tomasso started fast for the Cardinals in the second quarter, scoring an early layup that pushed the lead to 21-0. However, Houghton ended the scoring streak shortly after with a good layup. Tomasso was quick to respond, scoring a layup three seconds later. Walker carried this momentum with two good free throws that increased the score to 25-2. Kruszka and Kelly Moravec then both scored layups that gave the Cardinals an eight-point run. Houghton scored another layup before Fisher went on a ten-point run that would set the score at 39-4. The two teams finished the half going back and forth, with the Cardinals leading 41-9.

 

The third quarter started with the teams both scoring points with Emilia Johnson, Ka. Moravec, and Walker all converting layups. Shortly after, a free throw by Kruszka increased Fisher's lead, to 48-16. The rest of the quarter involved many free throw attempts by the Cardinals, with Lauren Nawojski, Anna Milham, and Emily McLaughlin all making multiple good free throws. The quarter ended with Fisher leading 62-24.

 

The final quarter started with the Highlanders scoring four points, closely followed by a good layup by Ka. Moravec. Walker and McLaughlin both kept it going with two good layups that saw the Cardinals lead 68-28. Milham continued Fisher's run with two good free throws. Fisher sustained the dominant game with a good layup by Nawojski, a three-pointer by Johnson, and a good free-throw by McLaughlin. The scoring streak ended, however, and quickly restarted thanks to a good three-pointer by Sydney Ottomano and a layup by Carlee Elliot. The game would shortly end, with Fisher winning 81-32.

 

Walker led the game with 21 points, 15 rebounds, and one assist. Tomasso was also impressive, scoring thirteen points and 10 rebounds. Kruszka had four assists, six points, and two rebounds. Johnson played 21 minutes, scoring five points and two rebounds.

 

The Cardinals travel to Medaille University on Saturday, January 7 for a 2 p.m. matchup against the Mavericks.
