Big Third Quarter Lifts Maryville 83-35
MACON, Ga. – Maryville rode its best scoring quarter of the season to victory in its debut Collegiate Conference of the South contest.
The Scots toppled host Wesleyan 83-35 thanks to a 34-point third quarter Thursday night. Maryville outscored the Wolves 34-15 in that period to turn a 33-14 halftime lead into a 67-29 cushion heading to the fourth quarter, and the Scots cruised from there.
"We will take it," Maryville head coach Darrin Travillian said of the win. "It took us a little time to get moving and generate some energy. This was our first game in 18 days, so we had a little rust out there. But it was great to get the win."
Courtney Carruthers and Ella Haney led the way for the Scots with 17 points apiece. Carruthers was 7-of-12 from the floor and added a career-high seven rebounds. Haney scored her season-high point total in just 17 minutes played and added a season-high nine boards to lead all rebounders. The first-year guard swished two of Maryville's six 3-pointers.
Took Care of the Ball
The Scots helped themselves by committing a season-low six turnovers and posting a 52-23 rebounding edge. The 38.2-percent (34-of-89) shooting night was Maryville's best of the season.
Maryville's previous best-scoring quarter was 18 points in the Nov. 13 win at Ferrum.
Wesleyan's Jamila Ra-Hashim scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight boards. Ra-Hashim blitzed the Scots for 29 points last season in Cooper Athletic Center.
Maryville bumps to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the CCS, while Wesleyan is 0-7 and 0-3.
Thursday was the first of three games in three days for the Scots, who are right back at it Friday in Atlanta with a 3 p.m. contest against up-tempo Birmingham-Southern as part of the Oglethorpe Classic. The Panthers are 6-4 and averaging 102.7 points to their opponents' 95.0.
