FREDONIA, New York - A late-game rally put Hiram women's basketball within striking distance, but the Terriers would fall short in their season opener to Fredonia, 60-51.

Hiram trailed 49-34 with 6:47 remaining in the 4th quarter before rattling off an 11-2 run to pull within 6 points with just 1:19 to play. The Terriers defense held Fredonia to 0 field goals for the entirety of that span, but the hard-fought effort would end in a defeat to start the 2022-23 slate.

Center Brooke Hickman led the way with 16 points and 16 rebounds in her Hiram debut, including 10 points in the 4th quarter alone. The 16 rebounds were the most by a Terriers player since Selena Vargas recorded 16 rebounds at Allegheny on December 2, 2021.

Hiram started strong by leading 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and 28-24 at the intermission. All 4 of the team's three-pointers came in the first half, including 3 from guard Jocelyn Janda, who gave the Terriers a 24-17 advantage with a three-pointer in the later stages of the second quarter. Guard Diara Parsons added a layup to give Hiram a 9-point lead, which was its largest of the game.

Haley Thompson filled the stat sheet in the loss, leading the Terriers with 3 assists and trailing only Hickman for the rebound lead with 9 boards. Thompson and Janda both finished with 11 points.

Hiram will continue non-conference play with the JCU Tipoff Classic on Friday against St. John Fisher (5 ET) and on Saturday against John Carroll University (2 ET).
