WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --  The Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team scored 14 first-half points off 11 Albright College turnovers, leading wire-to-wire in a 60-49 non-conference win on the second day of the Williams College Morin Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon at Chandler Gymnasium.

With six-foot fifth-year players Anna Barry (Andover) of Eastern (2-2) and Gabby Boggs of Albright (2-3) battling inside, the first half was contested largely in the paint, with the teams combining to score two-thirds of the first-half points in the lane and attempting only seven three-pointers between them.

While Barry and Boggs' first-half statistics were comparable, Barry set the tone in the opening minutes in helping the Warriors race to a 12-point lead just five minutes into play. Barry grabbled five rebounds in the first two minutes to spark Eastern to a quick 9-0 lead and had eight points and five rebounds 11 minutes into the game, while Boggs was limited to just two points and three rebounds in those first 11 minutes when the Warriors took control.

Through the early season, the teams average roughly the same number of turnovers, but the Lions committed 11 in the first half – mostly of the unforced variety since Eastern had only three steals – that lead to 14 points and accounted in large part for the Warriors' 11-point halftime lead.

Coming off of a 60-52 win over Stevenson University in the first round Saturday, Eastern raced to a 9-0 lead Sunday, with Barry scoring inside for the first two baskets of the game, senior guard Julie Keckler (Trumbull) – scoreless in Saturday's win – hitting a jumper off of Barry's defensive rebound, and following with an inside bucket and subsequent free throw that provided the Warriors with that nine-point cushion.

The first-half lead crested at 13 points twice late in the half on baskets by sophomore Taylor Salato (East Haven) off of a defensive rebound from senior Danielle O'Brien (Rockland, MA) that made it 33-20, and minutes later on another inside basket from Barry that regained that 13-point lead (35-22).

Eastern's 16-point lead in the final three minutes of the game was its largest of the contest.

Eastern scored 60 points in each of its tournament wins and allowed an average of only 50.

Barry and Boggs both reached their season averages in points and rebounds. Barry finished with 16 points on 50 percent field goal shooting and nine rebounds in 32 minutes while Boggs had 17 points and 13 rebounds in 39 minutes. Keckler also had 16 points to go along with six assists, five rebounds and three steals and only one turnover in 33 minutes. Salato added 12 points and four rebounds.

First-year guards Riley Griffin (Middleborough, MA) and Avery Stewart (Langdon, NH) both saw their first collegiate minutes. Both attempted and missed one field goal.

Behind Boggs, second-leading season scorer Mackenzie Dover had 11 points but was just 5-of-16 from the floor.

The Warriors turned the ball over only 12 times – four below their season average – and finished with a 20-13 advantage on points off turnovers. Albright was 0-of-7 from three-point range and failed on nine of 16 free throws.

Eastern and host Williams College both won both of their games in the tournament. After beating Albright, 76-69 Saturday, Williams defeated Stevenson, 56-40, Sunday.

In two tournament games, Barry had 34 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Salato came off the bench in both games and totalled 24 points and 12 rebounds with only two turnovers in an average of 21 minutes. She was 9-of-16 from the floor and sank all six of her free throws.

Eastern hosts Western New England University in a non-conference game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Golden Bears (1-4) bring a three-game losing streak into the game. WNE averaged 18 wins per season in the six years prior to Covid but fell to 11-16 a year ago, when Eastern ended a three-game losing streak in the series after winning the first ten with a 71-55 road win. Eastern turned the ball over only six times in that game, with Keckler scoring 24 points with only one turnover in 35 minutes and senior guard Jenna Serrantino (Cromwell) adding 17 points (7-of-10 FT) and five rebounds.
