Second Quarter Run Propels William Paterson Women’s Basketball to 63-49 Win Over Delaware Valley

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (1-1) used a 17-2 run in the second quarter to build an insurmountable lead en route to defeating Delaware Valley (0-2), 63-49, in the consolation game of the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 12.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Junior Brianna Smith and senior Justina Cabezas combined for 14 of the Pioneers' 17 points during a 17-2 run in the second quarter that lasted over five minutes. During that stretch, Delaware Valley was limited to just one made basket on 11 attempts.
  • Delaware Valley pulled within seven late in the final quarter, but William Paterson responded by closing out the game on a 9-2 run to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Smith led all scorers in the game with 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting (.615) from the field and 4-of-5 shooting (.800) from long range.
  • Cabezas finished with 12 in the scoring column to pair with eight rebounds.
  • She was named to the all-tournament team.
  • Senior Yakira Rosa logged eight points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
