Burgess Leads Women in Season Opener Versus Elizabethtown

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College women's basketball graduate student Meggie Burgess totaled 11 points and seven rebounds as the Green Terror fell to Elizabethtown Tuesday night on Rebecca L. Martin Court, 85-43.

McDaniel (0-1) trailed 21-9 after one before outscoring the Blue Jays 17-13 in the second, cutting its deficit to seven following two free throws by senior Josey Klingenberg with 1:00 remaining.

Burgess totaled nine points in the first half, including seven in the first quarter as the Green Terror trailed, 34-26.

McDaniel pulled back within seven at 36-29 on a three-pointer by junior Katie Klein with 8:06 left in the third, but Elizabethtown doubled up the Green Terror over the final eight minutes, 24-12, to take a 19-point lead into the fourth.

In her first collegiate game, freshman Bri Floyd scored eight of her nine points in the third, going 3-for-4 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three-point range.

The Blue Jays (1-0), who totaled 20 wins and advanced to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship a year ago, shot  62.1 percent in the second half and were 12-of-18 from the free throw line as they outscored McDaniel, 51-17. They scored 13 points off turnovers and 28 points in the paint.

Freshman Elaina Beckett just missed a double double in her college debut, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end. Klein finished with eight points and a team-high three assists as the Green Terror totaled 12 assists on 17 baskets.

McDaniel returns to action on Friday when it hosts the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament featuring Hood, Marymount and Juniata. The Green Terror hosts Hood on Friday at 6 p.m. before Marymount takes on Juniata at 8 p.m.
