CWRU Women’s Basketball Opens 2022-23 with 94-48 Win over Waynesburg

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team opened its 2022-23 season with an emphatic victory on Tuesday night, rolling past Waynesburg University 94-48 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans stand at 1-0 following the win, while Waynesburg dropped to 0-1. It was the first season-opening win for CWRU since a 69-60 victory over Allegheny to open the 2018-19 campaign.

Contributions came from all over the court for the Spartans, who saw five different players score in double figures in the game and 11 different players register a point. Junior forward Preet Gill came off the bench to register the first double-double of her career, notching career-best marks with a team-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Margaret Terry added career-highs with 16 points, seven rebounds, and six steals, and first-year guard Emily Plachta dropped 15 points in her collegiate debut. Also in double figures was senior forward Isabella Mills with 12 points, eight rebounds, and seven points, and junior forward Kayla Characklis with 10 points. Junior guard Sarah Mitchell added six points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

CWRU got its season off to a quick start, opening the game on a 13-2 run to take control early. Waynesburg was able to get back within two points, cutting the score to 15-13 with 2:59 to play in the first period, but CWRU closed out the period on a 7-2 win to lead 22-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Spartans continued to build their lead throughout the second period, and a layup by sophomore forward Evie Miller with six seconds left in the frame gave the Spartans a 45-24 lead heading into the break, the team's largest lead of the half.

CWRU's lead swelled to 30 points, 59-29, with 6:18 to play in the third on a pair of free throws by junior forward Kayla Characklis, and took a 37-point advantage, 70-33, by the end of the third quarter on a layup by junior forward Preet Gill. The Spartans would lead by as many as 48 in the game and closed out the win with a 46-point advantage, 94-48.

CWRU totaled 19 steals in Tuesday's game to match the seventh-most in a single contest in team history, and the most by the team in a game since the 2010-11 campaign. The Spartans finished the game shooting 42.3% (33-of-78) overall and 37.0% (10-for-27) from three-point range.

The Spartans will be back in action this weekend, traveling to Cincinnati, Ohio for the Lauren Hill Classic. CWRU will face host Mount Saint Joseph on Friday, November 11 at 5:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, November 12 against Westminster (Mo.).
