NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team picked up a dominant, season-opening victory over Averett University (0-1) on Tuesday night, 92-39. The Captains got a record-setting perfect night from junior Alivia Giles to headline a well-balanced overall performance at the Freeman Center.
In the first game of the 50th season of CNU women's basketball, Giles knocked down all 10 of her attempts from the field, becoming the first player in program history to register a perfect shooting performance with at least ten field goals attempted. The Suffolk, Va. native was 10-for-10 and added two free-throws to finish with a career-high 22 points on Tuesday night, in just 18 minutes played.
The previous field-goal percentage record for a single-game performance by a CNU player was held by Cynthia Allen for nearly 30 years after knocking down 14-of-15 shots against Marymount on March 6, 1993.
On Tuesday, the Captains finished with four players in double figures, led by GIles' record-breaking effort, to lead the team to a 30th straight home victory. The win extends the second longest home winning streak in program history and was tied for the 11th largest margin of victory for CNU in the Freeman Center. Giles was joined by Anaya Simmons, with 13 points, and 10-point efforts from Hannah Orloff and Katy Rader.
While Giles was red hot from the field, she also put together a well-balanced overall stat line with five rebounds, three blocks, and three steals for the Captains. Simmons' 13-points came on a stellar 6-for-8 shooting night as the 2021 statistical champion for FG% opened her third season with a solid outing. Rader played just seven minutes in her first career start, but finished 4-for-6 with a pair of assists and two steals to go with her 10 points. Rounding out the double-figure scoring performances, Orloff was tough inside, scoring on 4-of-6 shots with six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
CNU scored 92 points on 47.4 percent shooting from the field. The home team raced out to a huge lead, building a 36-6 advantage after the first quarter in the wire-to-wire victory. The Captains forced 42 turnovers and scored 46 points off of Cougar giveaways while earning 23 steals in the contest.
The well-rounded team effort included the first official collegiate action for junior Camille Malagar and sophomore Alexia Lindsey, after both players missed 2021-22 due to injury. Malagar played in the Captains' unofficial 2020-21 campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic, but poured in eight points, four assists, and two steals in her first official contest. Lindsey led the team with five steals while adding five points, two rebounds, and three assists.
All-American guard Sondra Fan scored nine points on three made triples and transfer guard Lauren Fortescue made an impact in her first game wearing the Royal Blue and Silver with a team-high five dimes to go with four rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Kaloi led the team in rebounding with seven boards and added two of CNU's nine blocks in the game, while Gabbi San Diego chipped in three assists and two steals.
Additionally, rookies Taylor Rawls, Faith Henderson, and Makenna Zimmerman each made their collegiate debuts during the game, with each of the freshmen seeing at least 15 minutes of playing time. '
Averett was led by Kalie Fleming and Rayanna Evans with eight points each while Olivia Garner and Natija Pate pulled in nine rebounds for a team-high rebounding effort.
Christopher Newport will return to action this weekend as they travel to the ETBU Tip-Off Classic in Marshall, Texas. The Captains will first play a Friday-night game against the host East Texas Baptist Tigers at 7:00 p.m. local (8:00 p.m. EST), before facing LeTourneau University on Saturday at Noon.
