Wolves Race Past Pioneers for Season-Opening Win

ALFRED, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team closed the first quarter with a 14-5 run and did not look back as the Wolves defeated Alfred State 78-44 to open the 2022-23 season on the hardwood.

Four Wolves were in double-figures for Keuka College (1-0) led by senior Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) with 19 points. Fellow senior Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) was right behind her with 17 points. Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) and Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) rounded out the high scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Keuka College 78 at Alfred State 44

Alfred State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead over the Wolves, but Lauren Hill got the Wolves back level quickly. The senior hit a three and followed that with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 7-7. That sparked a 14-5 run for the Wolves to close the first quarter as Keuka led 16-12 after one.

The Wolves would play with the lead for the rest of the game. A three by Killian Mahoney created separation and a three by Sydney Brown followed to widen the lead. A jumper midway through the second gave the Wolves a 10-point advantage. The scoring would close with a three by freshman Mary Cotter as the Wolves led 31-24 at the break.

Keuka College put the game away in the third quarter. The two teams traded a basket to start, then Killian Mahoney nailed a pair of threes and Sydney Brown followed with one in transition. Mahoney followed with another three. Keuka College shot 80% from three in the quarter. The Green and Gold scored 19 unanswered in the frame to take control. The Wolves led 58-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Keuka saw the game out in the final quarter. Mary Cotter had seven in the fourth to lead the Wolves. Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) and Gianna Padula (Kenmore, N.Y. / Cardinal O'Hara) added four apiece as the Wolves outscored the Pioneers 20-11 in the fourth to win the non-conference game 78-44 on Tuesday.
