Big Fourth Quarter Advances Pioneers into the Sweet 16

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The No. 16 Smith College basketball team used a dominant 25-point fourth quarter to top Brooklyn College, 76-58, on Saturday evening in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament at Ainsworth Gymnasium.

The win is Smith's 10th straight overall as the Pioneers remain undefeated at home this season (15-0). The Pioneers improve to 25-2 on the year, while Brooklyn's season comes to an end at 22-4. Smith's last Sweet 16 appearance came in 2020 and the Pioneers move to 6-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. 

Top Performers 

  • Junior Morgan Morrison (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Country Day) recorded her sixth double-double of the year, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds
  • Senior Katelyn Pickunka's (Westhampton, Mass./Hampshire) 13 points and 10 boards gave her six double-doubles on the year
  • Sophomore Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) came off the bench to finish with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range
  • Brooklyn's Chanel Jemmott totaled 22 points and eight boards


How it Happened

  • Brooklyn got the first basket of the game before the Pioneers used a 20-7 run to lead by 11 at the end of the first
  • Smith was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the opening period as sophomore Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) knocked down back-to-back threes early on
  • The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run to pull within one, 20-19, on a jumper by Mary Dolgin midway through the second quarter
  • Smith held an eight point lead with 1:34 remaining in the half before Brooklyn's Dolgin converted a trey and jumper to make it 34-31 Smith at halftime
  • The Bulldogs took a 40-39 lead in the third on a three-point play by Jemmott, but Smith responded with a three-pointer from Yamada
  • After another Yamada three, Gianna Gotti's layup pulled Brooklyn to within five, 51-46, going into the fourth
  • Smith turned on the gas and exploded for a 25 point fourth quarter to go on for the 76-58 final
  • The Pioneers shot 25-of-48 from the field and 11-of-25 from three-point range
  • Brooklyn was held to 38.3 percent from the floor and 6-of-16 from long distance
