BOSTON -- Abby Cavallaro splashed 6-of-9 three-pointers on the way to 20 points, pacing the University of New England in an 80-30 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the women's basketball regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 19) at Tansey Gymnasium.
The Nor'easters (17-8, 15-3 CCC) will take their eight-game unbeaten streak into the CCC Championship, which begins with two first-round contests on Monday. As the second seed, UNE will host one of those winners on Tuesday (7 p.m.) in the quarterfinals. [Interactive Bracket]
Cavallaro did most of the scoring in her game-high during the middle periods, with 17. Over the last six games, she has racked up 126 points and knocked down 32 triples, raising her season percentage behind the arc from 34 to 41.7 and near the top 10 in Division III.
Allie Goodman tallied 11 of her 15 points before the half for the Nor'easters, and Jordyn Franzen supported with 12 points and five assists. Katrina Krenzer made all four of her field goal tries and added nine points, while Juliana Tracey chipped in with eight points and six assists. Six helpers came from Sierra Tartre, too, who also collected nine rebounds. Kaylee Beyor secured a game-best 11 boards, including eight from the offensive glass, to guide UNE's 47-31 margin in the rebounding department.
The visitors shot 45 percent (30-for-67) from the field, and dished out 24 assists on those baskets. On the opposite end, the Nor'easters held Wentworth to just 23 percent accuracy (12-of-52), and converted 27 Leopard turnovers into 31 points.
Through 30 minutes, WIT could only muster six points per quarter against the UNE defense. It was 41-12 at the midway break, and 69-18 prior to the final frame.
For the Leopards (4-20, 2-16 CCC), Maddy Foster totaled 11 points and seven rebounds. Nattaly David scored another seven for Wentworth, which is the No.9 seed heading into the tournament.
