No. 7 UW-Whitewater Locks Up Share of WIAC Championship

The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team wrapped up at least a share of the program's 10th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship Wednesday night with a 56-35 victory against UW-Platteville at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks (21-2 overall, 11-1 WIAC) have now won three of the last five league regular season titles and a total of seven under head coach Keri Carollo.

UW-Whitewater held UW-Platteville (9-13, 2-10) to 27.1 percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers. UW-W outrebounded the Pioneers 20-8 on the offensive glass and held advantages in points off turnovers (29-9), points in the paint (32-20), second-chance points (9-2) and fast break points (20-3).

Aleah Grundahl paced the Warhawks with 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kacie Carollo posted 10 points and two steals, while Rebekah Schumacher tallied nine points and three steals.

Johanna Taylor finished with eight points and five rebounds, and Maggie Trautsch collected five of UW-W's 21 steals in the contest.

Neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm in the first five minutes of action. Back-to-back steals and baskets by Grundahl and Schumacher gave UW-Whitewater a 7-2 lead with 4:24 left in the first quarter.

The Warhawks built their lead to double digits with one minute left in the period and held a 20-8 advantage heading to the second.

Schumacher drilled a 3-pointer just under a minute into the second quarter to give UW-W a 15-point lead, its largest to that point. The team maintained its double-digit advantage through the rest of the quarter, leading by as many as 18 during that span and taking a 32-16 advantage into halftime.

After UW-Platteville made the first basket of the third quarter, UW-Whitewater embarked on a 12-1 run over the next six-plus minutes of action for a 44-19 lead following Taylor's put-back layup with 2:22 on the clock. UW-W held a 46-24 advantage heading to the final period.

The two teams played evenly in the fourth quarter as the Warhawks' lead never dipped below 18 points.

UW-Whitewater returns to the floor Saturday to host UW-Stout starting at 3 p.m. Schumacher, Taylor and Courtney Oomens will be recognized as part of Senior Day presented by Educators Credit Union.
