Fourth quarter York rally too much for Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team led by four points in the third quarter, but a 17-4 fourth quarter by York gave the Spartans a 55-35 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play.   

 
Inside the Box Score   

  • Marlise Newson led the Blazers with 11 points and five steals. The junior went 2-of-3 at the free throw line. 

  • Jenna Davis-Hans and Morgan Anderson grabbed seven rebounds each. Anderson added three blocks and four assists. 

How it Happened   

  • The teams traded baskets all through the first quarter, until 3-pointers by Newson and Davis-Hans down the stretch gave the Blazers a 14-10 lead to head into the second. 

  • York and Hood struggled to find rhythms as the second quarter unfolded with the two teams shooting a combined 9-for-29 from the floor. Hood trailed 21-20 but Kayla Watkins-Harvey found a loose ball on the block with eight seconds left to send the Blazers into the locker room ahead 22-21.  

  • The teams continued in a back-and-forth affair in the third quarter with three lead changes in the first five minutes. After free throws by the Spartans' Savannah Wilson at the 4:49 mark, York ended the period with an 8-1 run to take a 38-31 lead.  Wilson scored nine of her 14 points in the quarter. 

  • York controlled the fourth quarter as the Spartans allowed only four points to seal the win. Zumbrum scored six of her 14 points in the period. 

Analysis   

  • The Spartans edged the Blazers 32-28 in rebounds and held a 30-20 advantage in points in the paint. 

  • York had 17 steals on Hood's 28 turnovers, resulting in a 32-10 advantage in points off turnovers.  

For the opponent   

  • Kayla Ferris, Zumbrum and Wilson scored 14 points each.  

  • Ferris finished on 7-of-14 shooting, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and handed out four assists. 

  • Zumbrum also made 50 percent of her shots going 5-of-10 from the field and added five steals.
