Marietta pulls away from Muskingum for a 91-73 victory

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — Six Pioneers scored in double figures as Marietta College defeated Muskingum University by the score of 91-73 Wednesday (Fe. 2) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball.

"That was a tough road win over a team that keeps getting better, even when they are short-handed," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "I thought the big difference again was our size and our effort on the glass. We have a lot of things to work on, and this was a good step for us."

The Pioneers improve to 17-3 overall and 10-3 in the OAC. Muskingum falls to 8-10 on the season and 3-8 in conference games.

While Muskingum only held the lead for a couple of possessions in the first quarter, Marietta not able to pull away. The Pioneers led by five points, 17-12, with 3:32 left in the opening period, but Muskingum scored the next five points to even the score at 17-17. A layup from Hannah Schill in the final minute gave Marietta a 22-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Kelly Levering scored on a layup and an old-fashioned three-point play from Erin Hahn to start the second quarter extended the lead to eight points, 27-19. Devin Hefner pushed the advantage into double digits, 39-28, with a layup at the 2:50 mark. The Pioneers took a 45-37 lead into halftime.

The Muskies outscored Marietta 12-6 to start the second half cutting the deficit two points, 51-49, mid-way through the quarter. Marietta responded with a 10-0 run on buckets from Schill, Hefner, Olivia Gribble and a three-pointer from Kate Liston.

Muskingum managed to get within three points, 67-64, in the fourth quarter. But once again Marietta answered with a 13-3 run to go in front by 13 points, 80-67, with under five minutes left in the game.

Schill's final basket of the game gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game, 18 points, 91-73.

Hahn recorded a double-double to lead the Pioneers with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Levering and Gribble scored 12 points apiece, while Hefner finished with 11 and Schiil and Camille Cummins chipped in with 10 points each. Makenzie Wilson added eight points and eight rebounds.

Muskingum's Caitlyn DeMassimo led all scorers with 19 points. Taylor DeMassimo chipped in with 15 points and six boards. Halle Morehead added nine points and six assists.

Marietta returns home to host No. 9 ranked John Carroll University on Saturday (Feb. 5). Tip-off in Ban Johnson Arena is set for 2 p.m.
