KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team was outscored 32-20 in the second half as the Wolves fell to Alfred University 54-42 in an Empire 8 Conference game at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Wednesday.
Keuka College (1-17, 0-10 Empire 8) was led by Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) with 12 points. Meaghan McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) had 11 and six rebounds. Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) led Keuka with nine rebounds and added seven points.
Alfred University 54 at Keuka College 42
The Wolves got out to a fast start as Keuka College scored the first five points of the game to take the lead over the Saxons. Midway through the first, the Wolves held a 7-3 edge. Lauren Hill gave Keuka an eight-point lead, 13-5, with a three with just over a minute left to play. The Wolves led 13-7 after the first.
The Saxons mimicked the Wolves as Alfred scored the first five of the second quarter. Meaghan McGwin in the paint got Keuka on the board. The lead would slip to one until Jenna LaMere (Scottsville, N.Y. / Wheatland-Chili) knocked down a three to widen the gap. It would be tied going to the final minute, but Sydney Brown drained a three to put the Wolves up. Unfortunately, Alfred answered with a three in the final seconds as the game went to halftime tied 22-22.
After the game was tied at 25-25, Alfred went on a 7-0 run to build a lead over the Wolves. Sydney Brown hit a three for Keuka to end the streak, but the Saxons scored the next five points to build a 37-28 lead. The Wolves cut into the lead late with a pair of Hill free throws, but the Saxons took a 40-34 advantage into the final quarter.
The Saxons would push their lead to double-digits early in the fourth. A three by Sydney Brown brought it back to nine, 48-39, with 2:49 left, but that would be as close as the Wolves would make it as Alfred defeated Keuka College 54-42.
