WASHINGTON, Pa. -- A 38-point first quarter powered the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team to a 95-63 victory over visiting Geneva College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Monday at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
The win improves the Presidents to 11-1 in PAC play and 14-4 overall. The loss drops Geneva to 6-6 in league action and 7-10 overall.
Four Presidents reached double figures in scoring, as senior guard Kamryn Lach (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the way with 15 points. Senior guard Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) filled the stat sheet with 13 points, a game-high seven assists, five steals and two blocks. First-year sophomore Nautica Burwell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and freshman Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) finished 13 points and 11 points, respectively. A total of 13 Presidents found the scoring column in the 32-point victory.
After seeing Geneva gain an early 5-4 lead less than a minute into the game, W&J gained the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Morningstar. The Presidents tacked on eight more points to continue its 11-0 run that gave them a 15-5 advantage.
Lach buried a pair of triples to extend the advantage to 26-8 with 3:56 to play in the first quarter. Back-to-back field goals by senior guard Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) swelled the lead to 32-9 at the 2:45 mark.
The scoring barrage ended with a jumper from junior forward Maddi Gutierrez (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) that extended the lead to 38-13 after 10 minutes of play.
W&J converted a blistering 78.9 percent (15-of-19) of its shots in the first quarter. The Presidents drained all four three-point attempts and all four free throw attempts in the opening quarter.
Although the Presidents weren't able to replicate its offensive performance for the remaining three quarters, W&J continued to control the game. Baskets by McDaniel and Morningstar extended the lead to 32 points at 47-15 with 3:58 to play before halftime.
Freshman guard Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) dialed it up from distance twice over the final two minutes of the half. The pair of Bezjak triples gave W&J a 53-25 lead at halftime.
Burwell accounted for the final nine W&J points in the third quarter as the Presidents carried a 72-39 advantage into the fourth quarter. Bibbee highlighted the fourth quarter for the Presidents, as the freshman tallied 11 points in the frame. Bibbee knocked down three-of-five attempts from beyond the arc over the final eight-plus minutes.
W&J held sizable advantages in points off turnovers (35-10), points in the paint (42-28) and bench points (52-24). W&J out-rebounded Geneva by a 54-40 margin. Geneva committed more turnovers (30) than made field goals (22).
Mia San Nicolas led Geneva with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Meghan Dryburgh(Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) produced team highs in rebounds (7) and blocks (3). Bezjak finished with eight points, six assists and four steals. McDaniel added nine points, six rebounds and five steals.
W&J hosts Franciscan University of Steubenville at Salvitti Family Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
