Third-quarter Albright comeback too much for Women’s basketball

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team fell to visiting Albright College 59-53 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play. 

Inside the Box Score    

  • Marlise Newson finished with 17 points on 7-of-18 shooting. The junior also added four steals. 

  • Morgan Anderson scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Anderson added five steals and three blocks. The senior recorded her fifth double-double of the season.  

How it Happened    

  • In the fourth quarter, neither team could buy a basket in the first two minutes. A 3-pointer by Newson gave Hood a two-point lead, 45-43 with 8:03 left in the period. After a 7-0 run by the Lions' Gabby Boggs and Lindsey Williamson put Albright up 50-45 with 4:39 remaining in the fourth. Hood's Newson and Anderson responded with seven straight points of their own, including Newson's second 3-pointer, which gave the Blazers a two-point lead 52-50 with 2:43 left in the game. Both teams traded baskets for the next minute until layups by Williamson and Rauf gave the Lions a 56-53 lead with 1:23 remaining. Albright's Boggs put the game away with three free throws to secure the win. 

  • The scoring went silent for the first four minutes in the third quarter before Hood's Jenna Davis-Hans broke the scoreless drought with a layup to extend the Blazers lead to 12 points, 39-27 with 6:36 remaining. A layup by Albright's Maggie O'Hare ensued another back-and-forth affair for the next two minutes. The Lions picked up the pace after a jumper by Boggs at the 3:47 mark that would start a 12-1 run to take the lead 43-42 heading into the fourth quarter. 

  • In the second quarter, the teams traded baskets for the first three minutes. After a layup by Kayla Watkins-Harvey at the 7:05 mark sparked a 12-0 Blazers run to give Hood an 11-point lead, 30-19 with 3:43 left in the half. The Lions and the Blazers swapped the lead seven times before Hood's run gave the Blazers breathing room and a 37-27 halftime lead. 

  • Neither team gained an edge in the first quarter as both teams committed 14 total turnovers. A layup by Davis-Hans gave the Blazers a one-point lead heading into the second quarter, 14-13. 

Analysis    

  • Albright outrebounded Hood 37-30. 

  • The Blazers edged Albright 30-28 in points in the paint and 29-19 in points off turnovers. 

For the opponent    

  • Boggs led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed 17 rebounds. The senior added five steals and four blocks. 

  • O'Hare finished with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting and a pair of blocks.
