Cortland Women Defeat New Paltz, 62-46, in Battle of SUNYAC's Top Two Teams

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's basketball team grabbed a 10-point lead after one quarter and led by at least nine points the rest of the way in a 62-46 win over visiting New Paltz. The game featured the top two teams in the SUNYAC - Cortland improved to 13-2 overall and remained atop the league standings with a 9-0 mark. New Paltz, the defending 2020 SUNYAC tournament champion, entered the game second in the conference and is now 12-5 overall and 8-3 in league action. 
 
Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) led Cortland with 16 points in 25 minutes off the bench. She was 5-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and made 4-of-6 free throws. She also pulled down five rebounds. Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) finished with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and also registered five assists, five rebounds and two blocks. She hit four out of her five 3-point attempts. 
 
Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) added to the winning cause with eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) and Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) scored seven points each, with Malone also totaling eight rebounds, and Sarah Tully (East Aurora) led the Red Dragons with 12 rebounds and three blocks and also handed out three assists. 
 
Maddie Gillis was New Paltz's lone double-figure scorer with 10 points. Graci Serravillo tallied nine points and Julia Sabatino led the Hawks with seven rebounds. 
 
Cortland held New Paltz to 3-of-19 shooting from the floor (16 percent) in each of the first two quarters. The Red Dragons led 17-7 after the first quarter and by double figures most of the second quarter before taking a 27-16 lead into the halftime locker room. 
 
The Red Dragon lead grew to 16 less than two minutes into the third quarter on a Longford 3-pointer. New Paltz got back to within 11 at 34-23 with 6:28 left in the period, but Cortland eventually pushed its advantage to 18 on three occasions in the quarter, the last on a Fiona Mullen (Orangeburg/Tappan Zee) 3-point with 1:17 remaining. The lead fluctuated from 15-20 points in the fourth quarter. 
 
Cortland shot 39 percent from the floor, including 52 percent (12-of-23) from the 3-point arc. New Paltz shot 34 percent in the second half to finish at 24 percent overall, and the Hawks were only 21 percent (7-of-33) from 3-point range - 1-of-19 in the first half. 
 
Cortland hosts Oneonta Saturday at 2 p.m.
