BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Cortland limited Brockport to 18 percent shooting from the field and the Red Dragons defeated the host Golden Eagles, 44-31, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest. Cortland earned its 10th straight victory to improve to 11-2 overall and remain in first place in the league standings with a 7-0 conference mark. The 31 points are the fewest Cortland has allowed to a SUNYAC opponent since a 53-25 win at Buffalo State in February 2009.
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) led Cortland with 10 points, including seven during a crucial stretch late in the third quarter. She also finished with four rebounds. Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) scored eight points, pulled down five rebounds and distributed three assists, and Sarah Tully (East Aurora) finished with seven points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Fiona Mullen (Orangeburg/Tappan Zee) made two 3-pointers and ended with six points. Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) added five points, four rebounds and three blocks, Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) had five rebounds and three blocks, and Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) registered four steals, three assists and two blocks. Cortland finished the game with eight blocked shots.
Brockport (8-6, 3-5 SUNYAC) was led by Erin Radack with eight points and Serena Sordetto with seven points and seven rebounds.
The Golden Eagles' 18 percent shooting included only 12 percent accuracy (2-of-17) from the 3-point arc. Cortland was not that much better, however, shooting only 24 percent from the field overall and from 3-point range (7-of-29).
Cortland opened up a 9-0 lead to start the game and led 11-7 after one quarter. A Mullen 3-pointer and a Tully jumper extended a 13-9 lead to 18-9 about three minutes into the second. The Red Dragons led 24-15 at halftime.
Neither team scored for the first four minutes of the third quarter. Brockport was within five at 24-19 with 3:53 remaining in the period, but Cortland finished the quarter on a 12-0 run that included a 3-pointer and two layups from Malone sandwiched around a Longford layup and Tully 3-pointer to take a 36-19 lead.
Brockport went more than nine minutes without a field goal spanning the third and fourth quarters. Cortland led 44-20 with 4:56 remaining before the hosts scored the game's final 11 points.
