The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team made several big plays at the end of regulation and in overtime Wednesday night during a 71-67 victory against No. 18 UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.
Trailing 55-52 in the waning seconds of regulation, the Warhawks (12-1 overall, 3-0 WIAC) tied the game as Aleah Grundahl took a cross-court pass and knocked down a 3-pointer in the corner with just under five seconds to play.
Veronica Kieres knocked away a shot attempt at the other end to send the game into the extra period.
The Titans (12-3, 1-2) hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first two minutes of overtime for a 61-57 advantage. Following a free throw by Kacie Carollo, Yssa Sto. Domingo tied the contest with a 3-pointer at the 1:12 mark.
After a UW-Oshkosh basket on the next possession, Sto. Domingo gave UW-Whitewater the lead with another 3-pointer, this one with 38 seconds on the clock.
Sto. Domingo hit a free throw to increase the margin to two points, and Johanna Taylor came up with a block on the other end, grabbing the loose ball and passing to Maggie Trautsch, who was fouled and converted both free throws on the other end.
Grundahl and Carollo paced the Warhawks with 14 points apiece. Rebekah Schumacher made four of UW-W's 11 three-pointers to finish with 12 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Taylor collected 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
The Warhawks held a 46-35 rebounding advantage, including a 19-9 edge on the offensive glass. UW-W outscored UWO by a 13-6 margin on points off turnovers.
The two teams traded baskets in the opening period, with no team leading by more than one possession until the final minute of the quarter. Taylor gave UW-Whitewater a four-point lead with two straight buckets to end the period.
The Warhawks maintained their lead in the second quarter, holding the Titans scoreless for a nearly five-minute span before taking an eight-point advantage with 1:02 remaining in the first half following a 3-pointer by Schumacher. UWO cut its deficit with a basket just before halftime.
UW-Whitewater built its lead to double digits near the midway point of the third quarter as Carollo hit a 3-pointer for a 38-27 margin at the 5:43 mark.
The Warhawks stretched their lead to 41-29 with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter, but UW-Oshkosh stormed back with a 12-0 run to tie the game just over two minutes into the fourth.
Schumacher and Carollo hit back-to-back 3s for a six-point lead with 5:23 left. The Titans responded with six straight points to tie the contest again, but Grundahl converted a put-back layup and Carollo tallied another 3-pointer for a 52-47 lead with 2:11 to play.

UW-Whitewater returns to Kachel Gymnasium Saturday against No. 10 UW-Eau Claire. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
