Women’s Basketball defense lead Hood past Dutchmen

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team held Lebanon Valley to 28 percent shooting as the Blazers gained a 49-46 win in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.  

Inside the Box Score  

  • Morgan Anderson finished with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds. The senior added two blocks and two steals. 

  • Marlise Newson scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. The junior handed out four assists and added four steals. She went 4-of-4 at the free throw line. 

  • Tam Stanford recorded eight points and seven rebounds. This was the first year's career-high in both categories. 

How it Happened  

  • In the fourth quarter, Lebanon Valley's Kate Fitzpatrick started a 7-0 spurt to come within four points with 5:28 left (43-39). Both teams traded baskets until a hook shot by Phillippa Clouse as the shot clock expired gave the Blazers a 47-41 lead with 2:05 left in the game. The Dutchmen pulled within three points with 19 seconds left, but twere forced to foul. The Dutchmen had committed only one foul in the fourth quarter and nine seconds went off the clock during as LVC fouled four times. After Kuffa rebounded a missed free throw, the Dutchmen called timeout but were unable to find a shot before time expired. 

  • After Hood led 29-28 at the half, neither team gained an edge in the first six minutes of the third period. A jumper by Newson led a 9-0 run to give the Blazers an 11-point lead to end the quarter, 43-32. Three different players scored down the stretch for Hood as Hood built its lead. 

  • In the second quarter, a free throw by Nikki Etchison tied the game with four minutes left 25-25. The free throws came in the midst of a nine-point run for the Blazers that resulted in a 29-25 lead after a layup by Alli House made it 29-25 with two minutes left. The Dutchmen's Katie Kuffa answered back with a free throw and a layup to cut Hood's lead to 29-28 at the half 

  • The teams were tied three times in the first six minutes of play , but a free throw and a layup by Lebanon Valley's Jaime Youngkin sparked a 9-3 run to give the Dutchmen a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Analysis  

  • Lebanon Valley held an 14-10 advantage in points off turnovers and edged a nine-point advantage in bench points. 

  •  Hood, who ranks among the national leaders in 3-point field goal defense, limited the Dutchmen to 3-of-25 from the arc. 

For the Opponent  

  • Fitzpatrick led the Dutchmen with 19 points, including 10 in the first quarter, and seven rebounds.  

  • Kuffa added eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals. 

  • Daelyn Stabler and Cristina Fernandez grabbed six rebounds each.  

Notes  

  • The Blazers improved to 5-6 in the season and 2-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. Lebanon Valley dropped to 2-3 in the conference and 7-7 overall.
