HENRIETTA, N.Y. – If there were any concerns about rust after a four-week layoff, they disappeared quickly as Rochester defeated Rochester Institute of Technology, 94-50, in a women's basketball game at Clark Gym on Tuesday night.
It is Rochester's third straight win and fourth in its last five games. Rochester is 8-3 overall heading into the opening game of the University Athletic Association season on Saturday against Emory University in the Palestra (2 pm scheduled tip-off). The Yellowjackets were idle for exactly four weeks. UR's last game came on December 7 at Ithaca College (a 64-62 win).
RIT, on the other hand, stood at 5-1 heading into the winter break. The Tigers had two games at the end of December canceled in the Smit College Tip-Off Tournament in Massachusetts. RIT was idle since a December 11 victory over SUNY Geneseo. The Tigers lost their opener to St. John Fisher, then reeled off five in a row. RIT is now 5-2 and returns to its Liberty League schedule this weekend.
Rochester led this one for practically the entire game. The Tigers led once, at 9-8, after a jumper in the lane and a three-point goal. Rochester answered with seven quick points – Hannah Lindemuth in the lane, Kat Jenks on a driving layup, and a three-pointer from Charlotte Adler. It gave UR a 15-9 lead which grew from that spot.
Lindemuth led the Rochester scorers with 18 points. Alexis Sestric poured in a dozen points. Julianna Okoniewski had eight points and seven rebounds. They contributed in a variety of ways: Callie McCulley scored two points but grabbed seven rebounds and made three steals. Adler had nine points, Jenks finished with eight, Abby Greis had seven. In all, 16 of the 19 who played got in the scorebook. Eight had five points or more.
Rochester shot well, 38-74 (.514). The Yellowjackets hit 9 of 23 outside the arc (.391) and 9-11 at the foul line. They took advantage of RIT's cold shooting (18-63, .286; 418-63, .286; 4-21, .190 beyond the arc). The Yellowjackets scored 50 points in the paint, produced 12 points off RIT turnovers, and scored 21 points on fast breaks.
RIT's Kaleesha Joseph led all scorers with 20 points. She hit 7 of 13 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds. Alyssa Juergens scored 11 points for the home team. Kaitlyn Bockelman scored seven points, and Sarah Henretta had six.
