The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team will head into University Athletic Association play this weekend with some momentum, following the team's second-straight dominating victory, an 86-47 win on the road against Hilbert College on Monday afternoon.
The Spartans finished their non-conference portion of their 2021-22 schedule with a 5-6 record, while Hilbert fell to 1-12 following the loss. It was the third win in the last four games for the Spartans.
CWRU picked up right where it left off before break, after setting program records for shooting percentage and margin of victory in a 94-40 win over Kenyon on December 18. On Monday, CWRU finished the game shooting 47.0% overall, including 10-of-28 (35.7%) from behind the three-point line, while matching the team's season-high with 47 rebounds.
Senior Abbey Lawrence led all scorers on Monday and paced four Spartans in double figures with 27 points, her third-straight 20-point effort and eighth through 11 games this season. Sophomore Kayla Characklis scored in double digits for the fifth-straight game and collected her second double-double of the campaign with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. First-year Nyah Moore and sophomore Sarah Mitchell each added a career-high 10 points in the game, with Mitchell also finishing with six rebounds and a team-high three steals.
CWRU forced the Hawks into 18 turnovers in the opening half alone, outscoring Hilbert 26-7 off turnovers during the first two periods and taking a 56-23 lead into halftime. After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, four-straight free throws by Lawrence gave the Spartans the lead, and CWRU would never trail again in the game. A layup by Moore at the first period buzzer put the Spartans ahead by nine, 26-17, heading into the second period. Five-straight points to start the second, including a three-pointer by junior Savannah Glimpse and a jumper by Characklis, saw the Spartans' lead swell to 14, 31-17, with 8:51 to play in the half. CWRU's defense held the Hawks without a field goal over the final six minutes of the half, and CWRU closed out the period on a 25-4 run to take a 33-point lead into the break.
The Spartans also outrebounded the Hawks 26-12 over the first 20 minutes, and outshot Hilbert 51.4% (19-of-37) to 33.3% (eight-of-24).
CWRU went on to lead by as many as 40 points in the third quarter, taking a 72-32 advantage on a jumper by Mitchell with 48 seconds to play in the period, and took a 72-34 lead into the final period. The Spartans opened the fourth on a 7-0 run that saw the team's lead grow to a game-high 47, 81-34, on a three-pointer by Lawrence with 6:46 remaining, as CWRU was able to cruise to the victory.
Eleven different Spartan players scored at least one point on Monday's game, with 13 total players seeing action in the contest.
Monday's game completes the Spartans' non-conference schedule for the 2021-22 campaign. Case Western Reserve University will begin University Athletic Association play this weekend, traveling to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to face Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, January 8 at 4:00 p.m.
