Salisbury Women’s Basketball thumps Pfeiffer, 73-52, for eighth straight win

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Less than 24 hours after pulling one out in overtime, the Salisbury University women's basketball kicked it into high gear early and never looked back, thumping the Pfeiffer Falcons, 73-52, on Tuesday afternoon at Franny Murray Court. The game was played as part of the Jamie L. Roberts Classic, hosted by the Catholic University of America.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither side broke through for the first two minutes, but Kaylee Otlowski and Emily Dilger sank a layup and jumper, respectively, on consecutive possessions to give the Sea Gulls a 4-0 lead at the 7:25 mark of the first quarter. Leading 6-2 soon after, Lauren Fortescue drilled a triple, then Otlowski hit back-to-back shots and Hailey Ader's jumper capped the SU surge with a 15-2 lead at the 3:50 mark.
  • Amanda Finch hit a three for the Falcons to break up the run, but Otlowski connected on another jumper and Abby Wilkinson made a pair of free throws to put the Sea Gulls up 19-5 at the end of the first.
  • Salisbury kept its foot on the gas during a 26-point second quarter. Kolby Brown started the fun with a three that made it 22-7. Up 24-10 later on, Fortescue hit a jumper and answered Mara Ochoa-Contreras' three with a trey of her own. The three-point barrage continued as Kylie Webb converted from distance and Fortescue knocked down her third triple of the day to make it 35-13 at the 4:23 mark.
  • The onslaught continued as Fortescue and Otlowski hit back-to-back layups, followed by an Ader three-point play and a trey from Brown, finishing off a 19-0 run over four-and-a-half minutes that left Salisbury on top 45-13 with 1:41 until halftime. Pfeiffer eventually hit a three that broke up the run and made it 45-16 at the half.
  • Jada Welbon opened the scoring in the third quarter with a three that put the Sea Gulls up 48-19. Otlowski and Dilger each made field goals that helped SU maintain a 52-27 lead at the 6:19 mark, at which point Salisbury emptied the bench for much of the rest of the game.
  • Wilkinson hit three free throws over the final five minutes of the third, and Tori Rumbaugh capped the period with a steal-and-layup. Salisbury's lead stood at 60-35 after the quarter.
  • Rumbaugh connected twice from distance over the first minute-plus of the fourth quarter, building the SU lead to 66-38.
  • Pfeiffer edged closer and got within 68-50 at the 2:43 mark on an Alexus Boyd jumper. Otlowski came back in and hit a jumper that made it 70-50, and Sym Deloatch finished off the SU scoring with a layup. The Falcons hit two free throws in the final seconds to give the game its final 73-52 margin.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Kaylee Otlowski recorded a double-double for the second straight game, leading all scorers with 16 points (7-of-9) and 12 rebounds over just 20 minutes of action. The double-double is Otlowski's fifth of the season and 27th of her Sea Gull career.
  • One day after setting a career high in scoring, Lauren Fortescue maintained her hot hand by scoring 13 points, all in the first half. Fortescue went 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range over 14 minutes on the court.
  • Fortescue and Otlowski each made the seven-player Jamie L. Roberts Classic All-Tournament Team. Erin Doherty of Catholic earned MVP honors.
  • Kolby Brown and Tori Rumbaugh each chipped in eight points off the bench, going a combined 6-of-9 and connecting on four treys.
  • All 14 Sea Gulls who saw game action played at least 10 minutes, with only Emily Dilger (24) and Otlowski (20) playing more than 20 minutes.
  • Salisbury made 50.9 percent (27-of-53) of its field goals, boasting a 63 percent mark (17-of-27) in the first half.
  • SU set new season highs with nine three-pointers made and a 52.9 three-point percentage (9-of-17).
  • The Sea Gulls handily outrebounded the Falcons, 50-31, though Pfeiffer gained a 13-12 edge on the offensive glass.
  • The eighth straight win gives Salisbury a 10-2 record for the year and extends the team's longest winning streak since the 2014-15 season, in which SU strung together nine- and 13-game runs.

PFEIFFER GAME NOTES

  • Kenadie Hudler and Shalonda Wilkins shared the Falcon lead in scoring, netting nine points apiece.
  • Mara Ochoa-Contreras and Makalla Burnette each chipped in six points off the bench.
  • Pfeiffer shot just 27.5 percent (19-of-69) from the floor but made 10 threes, going 10-of-33 (30.3 percent) from distance.
  • The Falcons won the turnover battle 32-22. Brina Bentley and Tanaesha Ellison managed four steals each.

  • The Sea Gulls will return from their holiday break for the two-day Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 29-30.
  • Salisbury will do battle with Williams on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 4 p.m. EST, followed by a matchup with Hanover on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 12 p.m. EST.
