Carroll Routs Westminster in Daytona Beach Shootout

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team opened the Daytona Beach Shootout with a 79-42 win against Westminster on Monday afternoon. The Pioneers pulled in 57 rebounds, the most in a game since 2017. Olivia Rangel and Brooke Foster scored 12 points each, while Allison Thompson pulled in a career-high 13 rebounds.
 
The Pioneers (7-3, 1-3 CCIW) shot 44.4% in the second half after starting the game 15-43 from the floor. Carroll made five three-pointers in 26 attempts and made 12-16 free throws at the line. Carroll got into foul trouble with three players at four fouls, but their defense kept the Bluejays to just 16 points in the second half. Carroll tallied 17 steals and scored 28 points off turnovers, while the bench added in 44 points.  
 
The Pioneers found themselves down 2-6 in the early parts of the contest but crawled back with a 16-3 run, fueled by an and-one play from Foster with 4:42 remaining in the quarter. Carroll finished the first quarter with a 22-13 lead, despite shooting 9-26 from the floor and 0-8 from deep. Carroll sparked their three-point shooting with back-to-back made threes to start the second quarter from Theresa Wichser (7 PTS) and Katie Rohner (7 PTS). Westminster cut the lead to eight with 1:33 left in the quarter, but at the last second, Rangel knocked down a turnaround jumper to end the quarter up ten.
 
Carroll took a 16 point lead after starting the second half on a 10-5 run, kick-started by Wichser's second three of the game. Rangel scored six points in the final 3:50 of the quarter to lead the team. The Pioneers led by 17 to start the fourth quarter and exploded for 24 points on 10-21 shooting. Chloe Halverson added six points and four rebounds in 9 minutes of playing time in the quarter to give her eight rebounds for the game. The Pioneers held the Bluejays to just four points in the final ten minutes of action.
 
Carroll will finish out the holiday tournament with a matchup against Centre College on Tuesday at 12 PM EST, 11 AM Central.
