No. 24 Women's Basketball Defeats Connecticut College, 49-37

New London, Conn. - December 11, 2021 - The Springfield College women's basketball program closed out the semester with a 49-37 road victory over Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon. 

Springfield, who came into the game ranked No. 24 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III National Top 25 Coaches Poll, improves to 10-0 on the season. The Camels fall to 2-8. The Pride connected on 22-of-54 from the field for a 40.7 field goal percentage and owned a 49-33 advantage on the glass in the win. 

Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) supplied Springfield with 24 points on 10-of-19 from the field, to go along with 14 rebounds, and three blocks on the afternoon. Sidney Wentland (Elk River, Minn.) pitched in eight points, four rebounds, and two steals in the game. Springfield outscored Connecticut College, 30-20, in the paint. 

Jaycie Rojik and Molly Cronin each scored 12 points for the Camels in the setback. 

The Pride took a 11-9 lead after the first 10 minutes as Hourihan cashed in a team-high six points in the quarter to lead Springfield. In the second quarter, the Camels would tie the game at 11 a piece with 9:30 on the clock as Jaycie Rojik scored through contact, however could not connect on the free throw. Springfield would take a 15-11 lead, at 8:46, as Hourihan would score on back-to-back possessions for the visitors. Connecticut College sliced into the Springfield advantage as Roijk would pull up at the block at 7:42, before, following up her shot with six minutes remaining in the half to tie the game at 15 a piece. At 5:13, Hourihan would draw a foul and make two from the line to give Springfield a 17-15 lead. Neither team would score until 4:18 as Kayla Madden (Ashland, Mass.) would break the scoreless drought by intercepting a pass in the backcourt and dropping in a lay up to make the score 19-15. On the next possession, the Camels brought the game within one as Audrey Shaev flared out to the wing for a triple, making the score 19-18 with four to go. Springfield would close out the half with a 6-0 run, which was sparked by a tremendous driving layup from Wentland at the 1:16 mark. Another steal and score from Wentland with 21 seconds left would push the Pride's lead to 25-18 heading into the half. 

Springfield would apply the pressure to open the third quarter by going on an 9-2 run that was capped off by a Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) layup down the left baseline, which lifted the score to 36-20 and forced a Camels' timeout with 4:36 on the clock. Emily Trapp would close out the quarter with an offensive rebound and score to make the game 40-23 after three quarters. 

After the Camels scored of the opening posession of the fourth, Springfield was able to advance its lead up to 46-26, at the 6:05 mark, as Jaélen Daubon (Hyde Park, N.Y.) would crash the glass off a Wentland miss and finish between defenders to allow Springfield earn its largest lead of the afternoon. Although the hosts outscored Springfield 14-9 in the fourth quarter, the Pride's efficient third quarter was enough to fuel Springfield to a 49-37 road victory.  

 Springfield returns to action on New Year's Day as the Pride kick off the Hampton Inn/West Springfield Naismith Classic with a 1:00 game against Skidmore.
