No. 22 Comets Upset No. 9 ETBU in Key Early-Season ASC Clash

RICHARDSON, TX (11.29.21) - Kaylee Boykin banked in a three-pointer with just under a minute to play, lifting the No. 22-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team to a 53-49 upset of No. 9 East Texas Baptist Monday night in ASC play.
 
With the game tied, 46-46, heading to the final minute of the contest, Boykin's only trey of the night banked high of the backboard from the right corner to give the Comets (3-1, 2-0 ASC) the lead for good. Boykin and Jordan Maxwell each drained a pair of free throws down the stretch keep the visiting Tigers at bay.
 
After a defensive struggle through the first two quarters of the play, the Comets dominated the third period, outscoring ETBU, 17-9, in the frame, to secure a 40-31, lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest. UTD missed its first 10 shots from the field in the fourth, but still maintained a slim advantage. Paris Kiser drained a jumper just outside the paint with 3:42 remaining to extend the Comet lead to 42-36, setting up a dramatic finish to the night.
 
The Tigers (4-2, 0-1 ASC) clawed back with an 8-2 run over the next two minutes, knotting the game, 44-44, with 1:24 on the clock. Maxwell hit two free shots to give UTD back the lead, but the Tigers tied the game again on their next possession with a put back by Mollie Dittmar with just over a minute left to play.
 
The Comets quickly ran down the court when Jordan Rudd found Boykin alone in the corner for the final go-ahead shot by UTD.
 
Boykin finished the night with a team-high 15 points, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Maxwell added 11 points and Kiser rounded out the Comets in double digits with 10 points. Anna Jefferson-Polk led the Comets with a career-best 10 rebounds.
 
ETBU grabbed an 11-10 lead after the first period as both teams struggled from the field. The two teams traded leads early in the second before the Tigers would again take control of the contest before a Boykin lay up with five seconds left in the half gave UTD a 23-22 lead at intermission.
 
The Comets continue their five-game home stand Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. game against Howard Payne at the UTD Activity Center.
