ARLINGTON, VA – Host Marymount University got a big game from post player Katie McShea, leading all players with 26 points and 13 rebounds, in a 67-50 win over the University of Rochester women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at the Rose Bente Lee Center.

The loss drops Rochester's record to 5-3 on the season, while Marymount improves to 4-3 so far in 2021-22.

Besides McShea's double-double, the Saints also saw Terra Dzambo score 17 points. Overall, Marymount held a big advantage on the glass, outrebounding Rochester 49-38 in the contest.

Rochester was led by Alexis Sestric who scored 14 points. Maura Leverone had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists while Julianna Okoniewski added eight points. Kat Jenks chipped in six points and five steals off the bench for UR.

Turnovers were a big factor in the game, with the two teams combining for 53 miscues offensively, 27 for Marymount and 26 for Rochester. Marymount turned their 13 steals into 22 points while Rochester recorded 14 steals and had 18 points off of turnovers.

Neither team had a strong first quarter, as after ten minutes the score was 8-6 Marymount. Okoniewski scored the first basket of the game, and that followed with nearly four minutes of scoreless basketball on both sides.

Marymount used a 6-0 spurt to open the second quarter, boosting its lead to eight, up 14-6. Rochester stopped the run when Leverone hit a jumper with 5:08 left in the half.

Jenks nailed a triple to close the opening half with Rochester trailing 26-19.

UR's Sestric sank a jump shot early in the third quarter to get the Yellowjackets within five, but that is as close as the visitors would get the rest of the way.

A 7-0 Marymount run got the lead to 13, up 37-24 halfway through the third. McShea and Dzambo were the catalysts, scoring all seven of the Saints points over the two-minute run.

UR's Paige Gaynier scored the next five points to trim the lead back under ten, but Marymount quickly responded to regain a comfortable lead.

Abby Gress, Sestric and Okoniewski contributed points in a 7-0 burst for Rochester, spanning the final seconds of the third and early part of the fourth to pull Rochester back within seven, but Marymount clamped down defensively and forced seven UR turnovers in the quarter to seal the victory.

Rochester continues its road trip to end the 2021 calendar year with a contest at Keuka on Saturday at 2 pm.
