Women’s Basketball bounces back, pummels Goucher 96-40

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team returned to its winning ways by pummeling the Goucher College Gophers, 96-40, on Saturday afternoon at the Maggs PAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lauren Fortescue drained a three-pointer on the Sea Gulls' first possession, setting off an early-game barrage from downtown that featured another triple from Fortescue and one from Jada Welbon to put SU up 11-2 in the first two minutes.
  • Kaylee Otlowski nailed a jumper to make it 13-2, then after three Gopher free throws Salisbury went on a 9-0 run, featuring two more Otlowski buckets, to take a 20-5 lead at the 4:51 mark of the first quarter.
  • Kylie Webb, Abby Wilkinson, Welbon and Ashlynn Burrows each hit buckets over the final 2:47 of the first, with Burrows' deuce giving the Sea Gulls a 28-9 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
  • Goucher kept pace with SU over the first part of the second quarter and trailed 32-15 at the 5:57 mark, at which point the Sea Gulls came together for another surge. Fortescue connected on her third trey of the afternoon, then Burrows and Welbon converted jumpers and Fortescue buried one-of-two free throws to make it an 8-0 Sea Gull run and 40-15 lead 3:37 before halftime.
  • After a three from Briyah Haggins, Burrows answered with a layup, then Kolby Brown drained one from distance and Burrow hit another jumper to build the SU lead to 47-18 at the half.
  • Salisbury went to its bench for most of the third quarter, with five reserves making an impact on the scoreboard. Hailey Ader delivered a standout performance over her six minutes in the third, chipping in four points with three rebounds. Brown also scored four points, including the final layup of the period that ballooned the Sea Gull lead to 68-31.
  • SU matched its highest-scoring quarter of the game with 28 in the fourth. Caitlin Reed came off the bench to contribute seven points, and Sym Deloatch chipped in five points with four boards and two blocks. Salisbury led by as many of 57 and only let Goucher reach the 40-point mark in the final minute of the game.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Lauren Fortescue shared the team scoring lead with 14 points (5-of-9), going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. She also dished out seven assists and ripped away three steals.
  • Kaylee Otlowski added 14 points of her own, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor while hauling in four rebounds, blocking three shots and tallying three steals.
  • Ashlynn Burrows and Abby Wilkinson each scored eight points off the bench.
  • Jada Welbon, Kolby Brown, Caitlin Reed and Hailey Ader each contributed seven points, giving Salisbury eight players who scored seven points or more. All 16 SU players saw action in the game with 15 scoring.
  • Salisbury crossed the 90-point threshold for the first time since hanging 93 on St. Mary's (Md.) on Feb. 1, 2020. The Sea Gulls' 96 points are their most in a game since Dec. 29, 2017, a 116-26 win over Goucher at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
  • The Sea Gulls shot a season-high 54.1 percent (40-of-74) from the floor, knocking down a season-best seven three-pointers (7-of-22) along the way.
  • Salisbury forced 28 turnovers for a plus-19 turnover margin. All five starters clocked in at least two steals, with Welbon leading the team with four of SU's22 swipes.
  • The Sea Gulls outrebounded the Gophers 41-24, including 15-10 on the offensive end.

GOUCHER GAME NOTES

  • Kyani Quarles led the Gophers with 10 points (4-of-4) and five rebounds, all offensive.
  • Briyah Haggins chipped in nine points off the bench.
  • The Gophers converted just 27.8 percent (15-of-54) and just 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from long range.
