ASHLAND, Va. - The red-hot offense of the Christopher Newport women's basketball team showed no signs of cooling on Saturday as the 20th-ranked Captains cruised to a 95-60 win in the R-MC Tip-Off Classic Championship game against the host Yellow Jackets (3-1). The Captains improved to 6-0 behind a 20-point performance from junior Anaya Simmons, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

For the third time already this season, five Captains finished the game in double figures to lead a balanced attack against Randolph-Macon College. Simmons' 20 was a game-high while senior Sondra Fan, also named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with 18 points. Gabbi San Diego added 12 points on 4-5 shooting while Phylicia McInnis and Jovia Winkey each poured in 11 points for the streaking Captains.

CNU has now won 23 straight games with the second longest active win streak in the nation. It also stands as the second best in program history and the sixth longest win streak for any sport in Christopher Newport history.

Simmons had a standout performance in Saturday's road matchup, knocking down nine of her 11 attempts from the field to match her season high with 20 points scored. It is the fifth 20-point showing of her career and came paired with four rebounds and three assists. Fan also rebounded nicely for the Captains after playing just eight minutes in Friday night's blowout. She knocked down 5-of-9 shots for 18 points.

As a team, the Captains were scorching from the field, hitting 56.1% of attempts (32-57) from the field including six three-pointers. CNU also buried 25 free-throws while forcing 26 Randolph-Macon turnovers. The Captains grabbed 18 steals and finished with 33 points off of turnovers in the game.

The home team hung with the Captains through the first quarter after CNU took a 22-19 lead. In the second stanza, however, a 14-1 run in the second half of the period extended the Captains halftime lead. Fan and Simmons went back-to-back with layups late in the half to give Christopher Newport a 16-point edge, 42-26, before a three-pointer by Allison Burdette stopped the spurt and decreased the halftime edge to 13, 42-29.

CNU never led by less than 13 from that point forward, and took a 20-point advantage into the fourth quarter. Another 12-1 roll at the start of the fourth quarter eliminated any thought of a R-MC comeback as they Captains led, 81-51 with seven minutes left in regulation.

All but one of the active Captains finished in the scoring column en route to the teams fifth game scoring 88 points or more this season.

Christopher Newport will return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday when they play host to Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday, November 28. The game will be played as the middle game of a triple header at the Freeman Center at 2:00 p.m.
