ASHLAND, Va. -- In the opening game of the R-MC Tip-Off Classic on Friday night, the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team dominated Lebanon Valley College (3-2) on both ends of the floor for a 94-31 win. The Captains improved to 5-0 on the season in a balanced offensive performance as the defense put up a historical performance for the ages, holding the Dutchmen to single digits in all four quarters.
Since the NCAA made the change to four quarters in the 2014-15 season, the Captains have played 182 women's basketball games. While getting close in a handful of other games, the Captains Chaos never held an opponent to single digits in all four quarters until Friday night's matchup. The dominance started by allowing just six points in the opening quarter, followed by a nine-point effort to close out the first half. The Dutchmen managed just eight points in both second-half stanzas, and finished with 31 points.
The impressive performance included the third-fewest points allowed in a game under head coach Bill Broderick and the fewest since just 26 were allowed against Penn State Harrisburg in the 2013-14 season. It marked the third win of the season with a margin of victory at 50 points or more and the fourth time in five games this season that Christopher Newport has scored at least 88 points.
The defense forced 37 turnovers and scored 59 points off of LVC giveaways. Contrasting that monstrous number, the Dutchmen managed just two points off Captains turnovers in the game. Those two came on the opening possession of the game as the Dutchmen scored on three straight possessions to take a 6-4 lead in the game. After the quick start, however, Lebanon Valley went ice cold, knocking down just four more shots in the first two quarters.
Meanwhile, the Captains took advantage of a size advantage down low, leaning on Alivia Giles, Anaya Simmons, and Natalie Terwilliger in the opening quarter. Giles led the way with seven points while Simmons had six and Terwilliger five in the opening quarter. Christopher Newport opened up a 27-6 lead after the first ten minutes, shooting 52.6% (10-19) in the frame. The second quarter was equally as lopsided, as CNU took a 52-15 advantage into the locker room.
The Captains bench had an outstanding game, scoring 67 points to just two by the Dutchmen reserves. For the second straight game, rookie Hannah Orloff led the team in scoring with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting while grabbing three rebounds. Giles came off the bench for a near double-double, scoring 14 points with eight rebounds while adding a pair of blocked shots and two steals. Junior Katy Rader added another strong performance with 12 points and a team-leading four steals.
Rounding out the double-figure scoring performances was Terwilliger, who scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 12 minutes of action. Only one starter played more than 16 minutes in the contest while all eight players off the bench recorded at least 10 minutes played.
Continuing the trend of top performances off the bench, rookie Lexi White filled the stat sheet as well, scoring four points while adding six boards, a team-high five assists and two steals. Senior Julia Ng was 3-for-4 from the floor and finished with 6 points and 5 rebounds in just 10 minutes of play. Overall, the balanced effort included a 48.1% shooting performance (37-77).
As a team, CNU recorded 20 steals with all but one player recording at least one theft in the game. The Captains also outrebounded their opponent by 15, grabbing 47 rebounds including 25 on the offensive glass.
Christopher Newport will play either Randolph-Macon or Averett in Saturday's championship game at 3:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at CNUsports.com.
