BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Jordyn Franzen topped all players with 23 points as the University of New England women's basketball squad defeated Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 70-58, on Court Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum on Thursday evening (Nov. 18).

After facing a pair of nationally-ranked foes, the win was the first of the season for the Nor'easters (1-4). The Monks drop back to 1-1 on the year.

Franzen drained five treys on the way to her scoring total, while sharing the game-best of eight rebounds and posting match highs of four steals and three blocks. Kaylee Beyor made of 8-of-11 field goals for 16 points, and Juliana Tracey contributed 11 points. Both Beyor and Tracey had eight caroms, as well. Abby Cavallaro went for eight points and four helpers, and Sierra Tartre dished out seven assists.

For SJC, Grace Philippon hit four three-pointers off the bench and ended with 19 points. Jayne Howe put up 15 points, eight boards, and four assists. Cassandra Stapelfeld tossed in 12 points.

UNE held an early edge before the Monks assembled a 22-5 run, spanning more than 12 minutes across the 1st and 2nd quarters, to take a 25-14 advantage. The Nor'easters connected on just 2-of-17 shots and had six turnovers in the stretch.

However, Franzen came alive in the final 3:20 of the half, netting 10 as the hosts registered the final 13 to grab a 27-25 cushion.

With the same margin in the 3rd (31-29), Tracey notched seven in-a-row for UNE to spark a 12-2 run -- capped by a Franzen triple -- that set the gap at 43-31. Other than a couple instances in the moments that followed, the spread remained in double digits the rest of the way.
