Springfield College Posts 77-45 Win Over Maine Maritime

Castine, Maine - November 14, 2021 - The Springfield College women's basketball program closed out the weekend at the Mariner Pepsi Invitational hosted by Maine Maritime with a 77-45 win over Maine Maritime on Sunday afternoon.

Springfield now improves to 4-0 on the season, while the Mariners were handed their first loss of the season. The Pride scored 21 points off turnovers and dominated the paint with 32 points coming from inside. 

Sidney Wentland (Elk River, Minn.) scored 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and was 8-of-10 from the line in the win. Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) secured a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of steals. Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) dealt out seven asssists and only committed one turnover in 25 minutes of action. 

The Mariners jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter after Lauren Plissey knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter. With 17 seconds remaining, Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.) fed Czeremcha for the lay up to edge into the hosts' lead and made it a 16-13 game going into the second quarter. 

Springfield and Maine Maritime would trade baskets for the first five minutes of the second quarter, which made the score 24-20 in favor of the Mariners with 5:07 remaining as Plissey canned triple. The Pride would take their first lead since the 4:14 mark in the first quarter, at 4:23 in the second quarter, as Vinton would score in transition after Dzindolet stole the ball and passed it ahead for the breakaway layup to make the score 26-24. Springfield closed out the half with an 8-2 scoring run, courtesy of perfect free throw shooting, and take a 34-26 lead into the half. 

After a pair of free throws from Makenzie Monzon made the score 38-28, Springfield would put together a 11-0 run over 5:51 minutes to take a 51-28 lead. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Pride outscored the Mariners 22-6 and earned a 56-32 lead after a Vinton layup with a 11 ticks left in the period. Wentland scored nine points in the third to give the Pride a boost, while Hourihan scored eight points. Defensively, the Pride limited Maine Maritime to 1-of-11 from the field in the frame. 

After the Pride's third quarter performance, Springfield pushed their lead to 75-43 in the fourth quarter as Riley Robinson (Adams, Mass.) knocked down her second three of the contest, which proved the be the largest lead of the contest and allowed the Pride to cruise to the 77-45 road victory. 

Springfield will take on Endicott College on Wednesday at 7:30.
