MAry Baldwin edges W&L on Saygili's Layup with 2.9 Seconds Left

Mary Baldwin guard Demet Saygili hit her second-game winning shot of the weekend to lift the Fighitng Squirrels to a 72-71 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon over Washington and Lee.

After hitting the game-winning shot in the closing seconds against Bridgewater in the season-opener on Friday, Saygili did it again Sunday afternoon. With the Squirrels trailing by a point, Saygili drove the lane and hit a contested layup with 2.9 seconds left for the game-winning bucket.

Mary Baldwin held a five-point lead, 50-45, entering the fourth quarter. A bucket by A'Cetta Farrait and a layup by Jalen Gathers pushed the margin to nine, 56-47, with 7:06 left to play. Erin Addison hit 1-of-2 at the foul line for the Generals before a layup by MeKayla Clarker gave the Squirrels a double-digit lead, 58-48. Hannah Malik hit two foul shots for W&L, but Gathers answered with a 3-pointer from the left corner to give the Squirrels their biggest lead of the game, 61-50, with 5:11 left in the game.

The Generals then outscored MBU 9-3 in the next minute of play to close the gap to 63-59.

Afer W&L's Megan Horn and Gathers traded free throws, Malik hit a long 3-pointer to pull the visitors to within one, 65-64, with 3:19 to play. Saygili mde two foul shots before Malik converted a three-point play to tie the score at 67-67 with 1:27 left in the game. The Squirrels then turned the ball over and Grace O'Connor mde 1-of-2 foul shots to put the Generals on top 68-67 with 1:13 on the clock.

MBU turned the ball over on its next possession, but the Generals' Erin Addison missed a 3-point shot and Farrait controlled the rebound for the Squirrels. Gathers then took the ball to the hole and scored while being fouled to put MBU back out front. Gathers made the foul shot to complete the three-point for a 70-68 MBU lead with 19 seconds left.

Malik was then fouled while shooting a 3-pointer and she made all three foul shots for a 71-70 W&L lead before Saygili drove the lane to hit the winning shot in trafifc with 2.9 seconds left. Malik was short on a contested 3-pointer af the buzzer as the Squirrels grabbed their second straight win to start the season.

Saygili led the Sauirrels with 24 points and Gathers scored 17. Saygili filled up the stat sheet as the senior guard also contributed eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Farrait just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Mary Moran also scored nine points and Clarke came off the bench to add eight points

Washington and Lee's Malik led all players with 28 points. 

MAry Baldwin is back in action Thursday when it travels to Harrisonburg for its first road game of the season against Eastern Mennonite.
