Women’s basketball rolls in season opener

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Morgan Anderson had 17 points and 15 rebounds as the women's basketball won its season opener against St. Mary's College of Maryland 73-37. 
 

Inside the Box Score 

  • Anderson recorded six blocks and four steals to go along with her points and rebounds. 

  • Nikki Etchison scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, going 3-of-6 from 3-point range. 

  • Marlise Newson finished with 12 points, three assists and three steals. The junior went 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-for-3 from 3- point range. 

  • Snoop Robinson filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds 

  • and two steals. 

  • Jenna Davis-Hans had an impressive collegiate debut, finishing with eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals. 

How it Happened 

  • St. Mary's took an early 4-2 lead before Robinson started a 19-1 Blazer run that spanned over eight minutes of the first quarter. Anderson and Newson combined for 13 points in the run. A 3-pointer by Newson gave Hood a 16-point lead before a late 3-point field goal from the Seahawks' Amira Whitaker made it 21-8 at the end of the period.  

  • Hood maintained a double-figure advantage throughout the second period and led by 18 after Etchison knocked down the final 3-pointer to end the half 36-18. Four different Blazers scored during a 15-6 run in the third quarter, ending with a Davis-Hans three-point play to give Hood a 51-24 lead. 

  • Hood would extend its lead with an 18-6 run in the fourth quarter. Six different Blazers scored, including five points from Davis-Hans.  

Analysis 

  • The Blazers used 19 offensive rebounds to take a 13-3 advantage on second chance points. 

  • Hood held a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint. 

  • The Blazers outrebounded the Seahawks 47-30. 

  • Hood held a 35-12 edge in points off turnovers. 

For the Opponent 

  • Stephanie Howell led St. Mary's with nine points.  

  • Charlotte Donnellan paced SMCM with five rebounds. 

Notes 

  • Hood improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Seahawks are 0-1.
