Warriors Romp To 10th NACC Tournament Title

LISLE, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Behind a season-high 54 percent shooting performance, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team cruised to a 78-53 road victory over Benedictine to clinch its 10th NACC Tournament title inside the Dan and Ada Rice Center on Saturday afternoon. Senior Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) posted a double-double in the victory, recording 16 points and 11 rebounds.

  • After Benedictine opened the scoring with a jumper, the Warriors scored seven straight points to take a 7-2 lead. Junior Kalies Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.) knocked down a jumper, and freshman Kaitlyn Shadoski (Janesville, Wis.) converted a three-point play to cap the run. Shadoski and junior Ally Gough (Horicon, Wis.) each connected on threes to extend WLC's advantage to 10 at 13-3 with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Eagles cut the deficit down to five at 19-14 in the final minute of the first on a pair of free throw makes and a transition basket following a Wisconsin Lutheran turnover.
  • The Warriors scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 12-point lead at 26-14. Birkholz nailed a three, and Brug scored a layup before Benedictine ended the run with a made jump shot.
  • Four more points from Brug and a made three by Shadoski pushed WLC's lead up to 19 at 37-18 with 2:32 left to play in the first half. Freshman Sam Leisemann (Fall River, Wis.) made a jump shot in the final minute to make the margin 21, but Benedictine scored on its final possession to close the half with the score at 39-20 in favor of the Green and White.
  • Early in the third quarter, the Warriors rattled off 11 consecutive points to take a 32-point lead at 55-23 with 5:13 left in the period. Junior Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) connected on two threes, while Gough added another during the WLC barrage.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran maintained a big lead for the remainder of the third quarter and led 65-33 heading into the fourth.
  • The Warriors converted all eight of their attempts from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and claimed the NACC Tournament Championship by a final score of 78-53. 

  • Brug and Shadoski each scored 16 points to lead the Warriors offense. Leisemann and Mace added 12 apiece to round out the players in double figures.
  • WLC shot a season-high 54.0 percent (27-of-50) from the floor and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc. Wisconsin Lutheran was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, knocking down 15 of 16 attempts for 93.8 percent.
  • Brug posted her second double-double of the season, pulling down 11 rebounds to go along with her 16 points. Leisemann grabbed eight rebounds as the Warriors out-rebounded the Eagles 38-23.
  • The Warriors improved to 6-0 all-time against Benedictine in the NACC Tournament and handed the Eagles just their fourth home loss in the last four years.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran claimed its 10th NACC Tournament title with the victory.
  • The 25-point margin of victory is the largest by any team in a NACC Tournament Championship game.

  • Allison Michalski and Reggie Much each recorded 16 points to lead the Eagles. Benedictine shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50) from the floor and just 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from beyond the arc.
  • The Eagles bench out-scored the Warriors 36-15 and finished with a 13-9 advantage in points off turnovers.

  • The Warriors wrapped up their abbreviated 2020-2021 season with a 12-1 overall record, including 9-1 in the NACC en route to their 12th conference tournament championship in program history.
