Women’s Basketball: Titans Fall on the Road at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 90-70, against undefeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Saint Vincent College on Saturday.
 
Saint Vincent (6-0) went up on Westminster (4-4) early in the first quarter, taking an early 6-0 lead just under three minutes in. The Titans proceeded to rattle off a 12-6 run, capped off by a jumper by first-year Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, ME / Greely), to knot the game up at 12-12 with 2:46 left in the quarter. Westminster trailed 16-15 at the end of one. The Bearcats utilized a 23-12 second quarter and took a 39-27 lead into intermission. Titan junior Megan Meyer (New Galilee, PA / Mohawk) hit a three for the first basket of the second half to cut the Bearcats' lead to 39-30, but that would be the closest Westminster would get for the remainder of the game, as Saint Vincent outscored the Titans 27-17 in the third frame.
 
Westminster was led by Fitzpatrick with a team- and career high 16 points to go along with four rebounds. Fitzpatrick was also 2-for-2 from long range. Senior Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon, PA / Belle Vernon) and sophomore Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) followed with 12 points apiece (career-high for Russell) and tied a team-high with three assists. Russell also buried a career-high four three-pointers, while Murrio contributed five rebounds. Junior Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) added nine points, distributed three assists (tied a team-high) and gathered a team-high two steals.
 
For the game, Saint Vincent out-shot the Titans 46.4% (32-69) to 22-66 (33.3%). The Bearcats also held a slim edge in the rebounding department (44-40).
 
Westminster is next scheduled to play on the road Monday, March 8 against the Franciscan University Barons for its regular season finale at 6 p.m.
