UNE finishes strong to drop USM, 68-62

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Faith Connors and rookie Juliana Tracey accounted for all but one of the 24 University of New England points in the 4th quarter, as the Nor'easters turned around a small deficit for a 68-62 women's basketball victory over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

It was the first action for UNE (1-0) in 364 days. The Huskies fall to 0-3 on the abbreviated season.

The Nor'easters trailed, narrowly, after each of the first three periods. Southern Maine scored the initial four points of the final stanza to go up, 49-44, and still had a 53-49 edge with 4:59 remaining. But then Connors and Tracey took over, rattling off a 16-5 run in the next four minutes to swing the advantage (65-58). Connors and Tracey split the scoring, with an assortment of three-pointers, free throws, and a three-point play.

First-year guard Jordyn Franzen topped the hosts with game-highs of 22 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists. She tallied all her scoring in the middle quarters, when she only missed three field goals and canned four from long range. Tracey ended with 20 points that included five treys, and Connors had 12 of her 15 down the stretch.

UNE out-scored the Huskies by 33 points behind the arc, knocking down 13 trifectas, and displayed 7-for-13 efficiency during the closing 20 minutes. For the contest, USM had a fractionally higher field goal percentage overall (35.8%-34.5%), but only made 2-of-16 from deep.

Southern Maine held a 12-8 cushion after the 1st, and Kristen Curley pushed the spread to seven with the opening hoop of the 2nd frame (7:30). However, by the 3:20 mark, the Nor'easters had erased the gap and then some, as Franzen (8) and Tracey (6) combined for a 14-6 spurt. USM settled on a 28-27 margin at the half.

Curley led the visitors with 13 points, and Amy Fleming added 12. Victoria Harris registered eight points, and shared the team-best of seven rebounds with Jackie Luckhardt.
