Wheaton women's basketball rallies to earn a 71-66 victory at North Park in overtime

Chicago, Ill. – The Thunder women's basketball team rallied to earn a 71-66 overtime victory at North Park on Tuesday night. Wheaton improves to 5-1 (5-1 CCIW) on the season with tonight's win and North Park is 3-2 (3-2 CCIW) on the year.

Hannah Williams scored a team-high20 points tonight, including a critical 12 points for the senior in the fourth quarter. Williams grabbed eight rebounds, distributed four assists and snagged three steals. Annie Tate scored 16 points, with five rebounds and three assists. Ellie Cassel tallied 14 points with seven rebounds, two steals and two blocked shot off the Thunder bench. Hannah Swider registered 11 points for the guests.

Wheaton posted a 35.7% (20-of-56) field goal percentage, including 50% (5-of-10) from three-point range. The Vikings shot 39.7% (25-of-63) from the field, including 33.3% (5-of-15) behind the three-point arc. Wheaton shot 74.3% (26-for-35) at the free throw line and the Vikings had a 55% (11-for-20) effort at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the hosts 42-38, including a 10-9 edge on the offensive glass for the Thunder.

The contest was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter. The two teams were tied 20-20 at the halftime intermission.

North Park's Lauren Lee drained a three-pointer with 1:44 remaining in the game to break a 37-37 tie. Lee's basket sparked eight unanswered points for the hosts to close out the third quarter, giving the Vikings a 45-37 lead at the end of the period.

North Park held an eight-point lead at 53-45 with 5:00 remaining in the fourth quarter when Williams made a three-pointer to trim the Vikings' lead to 53-48. Williams' trey sparked a 10-2 Thunder run to close out the final quarter. Williams scored six of Wheaton's 10 points in the run to close out regulation. Wheaton's run accounted for a 55-55 tie at the end of the final quarter to send the game to overtime.

The Vikings led 67-66 with 30-seconds left in overtime when Zoe Nordling made one of two free throws to give Wheaton a 68-66 lead. Tate added a free throw with 21-seconds left to extend Wheaton's lead to 69-66 and Swider made a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to account for the five-point win at 71-66.

Jayla Johnson led North Park with 24 points, five rebounds and three assists. Emily Czuhajewski added 10 points. Josie Summerville grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Sinead Molloy distributed six assists for the hosts.

The Thunder travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Thursday night for a matchup at Carthage College.
