Hope Charges Past Albion

Olivia Voskuil set the tone for the Hope College women's basketball team Saturday by swatting away two opposing shots in the first 38 seconds.

Teammate Kate Majerus then made sure Albion College couldn't get to hers.

The Flying Dutch soared to an 86-58 victory against the Britons on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse behind a record-setting shot-blocking performance from Voskuil and a career-high scoring performance from Majerus.

Voskuil, pictured far right, nearly recorded a triple-double. The senior center from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and a school-record nine blocked shots in 26 minutes.

Majerus, pictured, totaled a game-high 17 points off the bench to lead five Flying Dutch in double figures. The junior forward from Sycamore, Illinois (Sycamore) shot 75 percent from the field (6-8) and 66.7 percent from 3-point range (4-6).

"Kate's always been really good. Just getting the opportunity to get in the game and show what she's made of is the biggest thing," Voskuil said of Majerus, who surpassed her previous career-high of 10 points scored on Wednesday in the season-opening win against Concordia-Chicago. "Kate's always been in the gym. She's always been a great shooter."

Majerus returned the compliment to Voskuil, who surpassed the previous Hope blocked shot record of seven set by Carrie Snikkers vs. Alma in 2008.

"(Olivia) definitely takes some of the weight off of our shoulders when we're on the ball," Majerus said. "Knowing that we have a 6-3 player that's a Defensive Player of the Year behind us definitely helps. We're lucky to have her. She has our back at all times. "

Voskuil blocked five shots in the second half as Hope (2-0 overall) outscored Albion by a 48-31 margin.

The Britons (0-1) finished the game shooting 29.5 percent from the field (18-61).

Voskuil and Majerus each scored six points during the second quarter to help the Flying Dutch answer an Albion charge. After Hope grabbed a 19-10 first-quarter lead, the Britons rallied to get within four points midway through the second quarter.

The Flying Dutch went on a half-ending 13-6 run for a 38-27 lead. Majerus passed her career-high with 11 first-half points.

"When we can defend and rebound, we can run," Morehouse said. "When we can run, we're pretty good offensively."

Senior guard Kenedy Schoonveld of Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian) joined Majerus in double figures with 13 points. Eleven of them came during the first half.

Junior guard Kasey DeSmit of Hudsonville, Michigan (Hudsonville) chipped in 12 points, including eight during the third quarter alone.

Senior guard Sydney Muller of Grand Rapids, Michigan (Grand Rapids Christian) added 10 points.

The win was Hope's 31st in a row, matching the second-longest win streak in team history (2002-03).
