Rhodes Snaps Five Records in 133-107 Victory Over BSC

Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball scored 34 or more points in each of the final three periods on their way to yet another record-breaking day. The Lynx, who just scored 118 points the night before, swept Birmingham-Southern College on the weekend with Sunday's 133-107 victory. Rhodes is now 2-0 on the season while BSC falls to 2-5.

It's the first time in program history that the Lynx have scored 100 or more points in back-to-back games. Rhodes shattered their records set the previous night for most points scored in a single game for both Rhodes and SAA women's basketball, and today also broke the Rhodes and SAA women's basketball records for combined points in a game (240).

Five Lynx scored in double digits, led by Kiera Downey's 26 points. She recorded a career-high six treys on 12 attempts and narrowly missed a double-double after accumulating nine assists, tying her career-high. Catherine  Althoff recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds while fellow Lynx Alli Mayeux also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alexys Mathangani tied her career-high 19 points after sinking eight of 11 field goals, and Maya Longacre went 6-of-8 for 17 points. Longacre narrowly missed a double-double for the second night in a row as she also grabbed nine rebounds. Ellen Hagen and Taya Lee rounded out double-digit scoring with 12 points each, a new career high for Lee.

Rhodes found themselves trailing 31-26 after the first 10 minutes and then by two at halftime, despite shooting a .568 field goal shooting percentage in the first half. BSC capitalized on free throws in the first half sinking 15 of 18 attempts. BSC led by nine with 6:20 left in the third period, but eight straight points put Rhodes back in the game. The Lynx trailed by one when BSC was charged with two fouls, sending the Lynx to the charity stripe for four free throws. Mayeux sank all four to give the Lynx the lead. BSC tied the game 85-all with 2:11 left, but Rhodes finished the period on a 10-4 run to lead 95-89 headed into the final frame.

BSC pulled within one three minutes into the fourth period, but seven straight points for the home squad put some breathing room between the teams once again. Rhodes led 105-99 when the Lynx scored 13 straight points, which included six free throws, on their way to a 22-2 run. Freshman A'niya Lagarde sank the record-breaking layup to give Rhodes 120 points with 2:35 remaining in the game. The final bucket of the night came on a putback from Lee with about 24 seconds remaining.

Seventy-four of Rhodes' points came in the paint compared to 34 from BSC. Overall the Lynx shot 51.1% accuracy in the field going 47-of-92.

Rhodes will look ahead to their first road matchup of the season on Friday, January 22 at Centre College.
