Presidents come up just short in PAC Championship game, 54-52

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball came up a basket short in a 54-52 loss to Grove City College in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship game Saturday evening at Saint Vincent College's Carey Center. 
 
The Presidents finish the season at 18-10. The win was the 12th straight for the Wolverines, who improve to 25-2 overall. 
 
Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) capped her stellar PAC Tournament with a 25-point,15-rebound performance in Saturday's title game. It was the 10th double-double of the season for Seto. She recorded a double-double in all three tournament games, as the junior averaged 25.3 points and 15.3 rebounds during the three contests. Seto shot 57.6 percent (30-for-52) from the field and 5-for-10 from three-point range. 
 
The score was tied at 32-32 entering the fourth quarter. A layup by Seto gave W&J a 35-34 lead with 8:32 to play. That was the last lead for the Presidents on the night, as the Wolverines drained back-to-back threes to take a 40-35 edge with 6:46 left. 
 
Seto used a driving layup to start a 7-2 spurt which tied the game. Another triple by Victoria Koeck (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) and then a steal by Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) led to a tying layup by Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) on the other end at with 5:09 left. 
 
Grove City responded with five straight points, two of which came as the shot clock expired, which allowed the Wolverines to take a 47-42 lead with 3:45 remaining. Seto then ripped off five more points to cut the deficit to three (50-47) at the 2:37 mark. 
 
Koeck knocked down a clutch triple in the final minute to cut the deficit to 51-50 with 34 seconds to play. The next five points came via the charity stripe, which allowed Grove City to take a 54-52 lead with three seconds to play. 
 
W&J had a chance to tie or take the lead. However, the ball was lost out of bounds and awarded to Grove City after a brief discussion. The Wolverines then tossed the ball down court to run out the clock and secure the championship.   
 
After the Wolverines pushed out to an early edge, Seto drained a three-pointer to give the Presidents their first lead at 7-6 with 6:42 to play in the opening quarter. 
 
The Presidents used a 9-0 surge to take a 16-8 lead following five straight points by Seto. A three-point play followed by a jumper by Seto allowed the Presidents to build the eight-point edge with 3:27 to play in the quarter. 
 
A split at the free throw line by Megan Williams (Bay Village, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) with 3.6 seconds left in the quarter made the score 19-13 after the first. 
 
An early second quarter three-pointer by Koeck extended the Presidents lead to nine (22-13), the largest of the opening half. 
 
From there the Wolverines buckled down defensively, using an 11-5 run to close the half. Grove City scored the final five points of the second, which included a layup with 1:27 to play in the frame. 
 
W&J held a narrow 27-24 lead at halftime. Seto led all players with 14 points and nine rebounds in the opening half. The Presidents drained 4-of-9 attempts from behind the three-point line. 

The offenses bogged down in the third quarter. Grove City out-scored W&J by an 8-5 margin in a to tie the score at 32-32 going to the fourth. All five W&J points in the quarter came from Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central). 
 
Grove City held advantages in points off turnovers (19-14), points in the paint (26-22) and second chance points (15-10). The Wolverines out-rebounded the Presidents by a narrow 39-37 margin. W&J was plus-six in bench points (15-9). 
 
Koeck joined Seto in double figures scoring. The freshman finished with 12 points, as she finished 4-of-5 from behind the three-point line. 

Saturday was the fifth meeting between Grove City and W&J in the PAC Championship Tournament and the second in the league's title game. Saturday's title tilt was the league's first championship tournament title game played on a neutral floor. The PAC went to its championship tournament format in 1999-00.
