WPI Clinches NEWMAC Tournament Spot with Triumph at Mount Holyoke

South Hadley, MA --- A 22-0 second quarter for WPI women's basketball paved the way for a 68-36 victory by the Engineers over host Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. 

The win, coupled with Babson's victory over Coast Guard, clinches a spot in next week's NEWMAC tournament for the Engineers (14-11, 4-6 NEWMAC).  The seventh-seeded Crimson and Gray will travel to second-seeded Springfield for a 7pm quarterfinal contest on Wednesday. 

Senior Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) led the Engineers with 12 points, and Emily Raynowska (Brentwood, NH) scored 10 points off of the bench. Eleven different WPI players got into the scorebook, and fourteen Engineers played for at least seven minutes in the win. 

WPI kept Mount Holyoke scoreless for more than fifteen-minutes while going on a 39-0 run to take a 52-15 lead. 

The hosts led 15-13 after one period, but WPI blanked them throughout the second quarter and then again for more than five minutes after halftime. 

WPI led 35-15 at the break and 58-18 after three quarters, outscoring the Lyons 45-3 over the middle twenty minutes. The Engineers ceded only three free-throws in the third quarter, holding Mount Holyoke without a field goal for two full periods. 

Alex Scariati (Scotch Plains, NJ) led all players with seven assists, to go with her six points and two steals for the Engineers. Bailey Savage (Charlton, MA) and Lisa Cristiano (Valhalla, NY) scored nine points apiece for WPI, who led by as many as 40 points and shot 32-69 (46.4%) from the floor. 

WPI had an enormous edge in points in the paint (58-8), fast break points (14-0) and bench points (33-9). 

Annika Brooks (Portland, ME) led all players with 13 minutes in a losing effort for the Lyons. Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, NY) and Mikayla McEwen (South Hadley, MA) grabbed seven rebounds apiece, with McEwen adding three assists and a game-high six steals. 

Mount Holyoke ends their season with a record of 1-23, and a 0-10 mark in conference play.
