GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team scored a 95-83 Atlantic East Conference victory over Immaculata on Wednesday evening to complete the season sweep of the Mighty Macs and secure the #3 seed for the upcoming Atlantic East Conference playoffs.
Gwynedd Mercy will host a home playoff game on Monday, February 24th. Seedings and pairings wil be finalized after Saturday's action.
Denise Sacco and Sydney Thompson led the Griffins with 14 points each. Haley Crossley added her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Elise Sylvester and Tamia Wessels each chipped in 11.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 25-17 lead after the first quarter and stretched their lead in the second and third stanzas with 29 points in each quarter.
A Sacco triple in the third quarter would give GMercyU their largest lead 79-55 with 2:21 remaining in the frame.
Immaculata would not go quietly in the fourth, cutting the Gwynedd lead to 88-78 with 4:03 remaining, but the Griffins were able to put the Macs away with a Sylvester layup and another Sacco three pointer to help secure the outcome.
For the contest, GMercyU had just 10 turnovers compared to 25 for IU. The Griffins were able to turn those mistakes into 27 points.
Immaculata out-rebounded the Griffins 79-56, Theresa Kearney led the Macs with 14 boards and 12 points while Annie Kohutka finished with a game-high 20 points.
The Griffins will close out the regular season on Saturday to celebrate Senior Day honoring Sacco, Chyanne Fine and Tolu Omole against Wesley with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
