WORCESTER – WPI women's basketball team saw four players tally double figures led by 14 off the bench from Emily Raynowska (Brentwood, NH) as the Engineers defeated Clark University 67-54 in NEWMAC action this evening.
With the victory, the Engineers improve to 11-5 on the year and 1-0 in the NEWMAC, while the Cougars slip to 4-13 overall and 0-2 I the league with the loss.
Raynowska connected on 7-of-10 from the floor to lead WPI and added seven rebounds including four on the offensive glass.
Victoria Mirecki (Rock Tavern, NY) and Alana Keating (Leominster, MA) chipped in with 11 points apiece for the Engineers. Keating added three rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Mirecki hauled in six boards with three assists. Kara O'Neil (Holden, MA) was the final Engineer in double figures with 10 points.
The Cougars featured three players in double figures led by a game-high 17 points from Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, MA). Favaloro finished the double double with 11 rebounds including 10 on the defensive glass.
Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, MA) added 12 points for the Cougars with four rebounds and three assists, while Hallie Johnson (Princeton, MA) finished with a double double of her own with 10 points and a game-best 12 boards.
With the game tied 11-11 after a quarter, the WPI offense came alive as they outscored the Cougars 23-7 in the second to take a 34-18 lead at the half.
Clark was able to cut into the Engineers lead in the third quarter outscoring the Engineers by seven in the frame to trail 46-37 after three quarters of action.
WPI opened the final quarter with a 5-0 run extending the lead to 51-37 just under two minutes into the frame, but Clark would not go away cutting the lead to eight, 58-50, on a Favaloro layup with 2:37 left in the game. WPI quickly pushed the lead back to 13 to secure the victory.
WPI kicks off a brief two-game road to the town of Wellesley on Saturday, squaring off with Babson at 3pm. Clark is back at home on Saturday, facing MIT at 1pm.
