The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team posted a strong second-half performance Wednesday night in a 67-52 victory over UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Kachel Gymnasium.
The Warhawks (16-1 overall, 6-0 WIAC) outscored the Pioneers 44-24 in the second half, including a 24-12 margin in the fourth quarter, when UW-W pulled away after leading by three points through three quarters.
UW-Whitewater's 14-game winning streak matches the second-largest in program history, tying the 2013-14 team and the 2007-08 team.
Junior forward Johanna Taylor recorded 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and seven blocks, tied for the sixth-most in one game in program history and tied for her career high.
Seniro guard Becky Raeder totaled 12 points, four rebounds and two steals, and freshman forward Aleah Grundahl collected 11 points and three rebounds. Sophomore guard Veronica Kieres finished with nine points, four rebounds and two steals, and sophomore forward Courtney Oomens tallied eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.
UW-Whitewater held UW-Platteville (9-8, 1-5) to 30.4 percent shooting in the contest while converting at a 42.9 percent clip on the other end, including a 51.9 percent showing in the second half.
The two teams combined for only eight points over the first 5:28 of the first quarter. The Warhawks took their largest lead of the period at 15-10 following a 3-pointer by junior guard Rebekah Schumacher with 57 seconds on the clock.
The Pioneers tallied the first six points of the second quarter for an 18-15 advantage at the midway point. UW-Whitewater got on the board at the 4:08 mark with a layup by Taylor.
UW-Platteville built a seven-point lead until Taylor and freshman forward Erika Simmons converted layups on back-to-back possessions. The Pioneers recorded the final bucket of the quarter to take a 28-23 halftime lead.
UW-Platteville continued its momentum early in the third, taking its largest lead of the game at 35-25 with 8:22 remaining in the quarter.
UW-Whitewater rallied with a 10-0 run to tie the game, and took the lead for good on Grundahl's jumper in the paint with 3:14 left in the period.
The Warhawks pushed their one-possession lead to seven early in the fourth on back-to-back buckets by Taylor and Grundahl. UW-Whitewater continued to extend its lead, gaining a double-digit advantage by the midway point of the quarter.
The Warhawks visit UW-Oshkosh Saturday at 3 p.m. to close the first half of the WIAC schedule.
