For the second consecutive game, the Emory University women's basketball team used a devasting late-game run to defeat a University Athletic Association opponent on the road, topping Brandeis University, 75-67, Sunday afternoon in Waltham, MA.
The Eagles continue to roll, winning their seventh straight contest, and move to 12-2 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference games. Emory stands atop of the UAA standings through three games, tied with Case Western Reserve at 3-0. The loss drops the Judges to 11-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Trailing 50-44 late in the third quarter, the Eagles again stepped up with a dominating stretch of basketball, outscoring Brandeis 21-3 including an 18-3 run through the opening 5:41 minutes of the fourth quarter. During the stretch, the Eagles held the Judges without a successful field goal in almost seven minutes of game action and forced four turnovers.
In total, the Eagles outscored Brandeis 28-17 over the final 10 minutes of play. The 28 points represented just the third time Emory had reached 28 or more points in a quarter in 2019-20 and were the most points scored in a fourth quarter by the Eagles this season.
Senior Allison Chernow had her third straight UAA game in double figures, tying a season-high with 20 points which led all scorers. Chernow was one of six Eagles with eight or more points and one of three with 12 points or more. Sophomore Tori Huggins finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior Blair Ripley notched 12 points in 16 minutes off to bench and coupled it with five rebounds and her second consecutive game with three blocks. The three rejections gave the junior 89 in her career, moving her into fourth place all-time. Sophomore Anna Arato knocked down a season-best three three-points as she tallied nine points and four rebounds. Junior Molly Weiss added three successful treys as she posted nine points in the win.
For the game, the Eagles were 28-for-73 (38.4%) from the field and 8-for-27 from long range. The defense held Brandeis to just 15.8% from behind the three-point arc (3-for-19), the fifth game out of the last six Emory had held an opposing team to three three-pointers or fewer, and 24-for-63 (38.1%) in field goals. The Judges held the slim rebounding advantage, 45-42, but the Eagles were able to force 17 turnovers.
The Eagles return to Atlanta for a home weekend against Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve on January 24th and 26th. Tip off against the Tartans is set for 6:00 PM Friday evening inside the WoodPEC.
