No. 8 Women's Basketball Rallies To Beat George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Mady Burdett led all scorers with 22 points, Makana Stone added 19 more and the No. 8 Whitman College women's basketball team used lockdown fourth quarter defense to rally past George Fox 62-54 in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

The Blues (13-2, 5-1 NWC) erased a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Bruins 22-4 in the final period for the win. Whitman reeled off 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, not allowing a single point until Haley Stonebridge got her jumper to go with 56 seconds remaining. Burdett nailed a trio of three pointers in the quarter with Kaelan Shamseldin (9 pts) draining one of her own to the cap the game-changing run.

Kylin Collman led the Bruins (11-4, 3-3 NWC) with 13 points. Stonebridge added 11 points and Emily Holder put up eight points and 10 rebounds.

It was tough sledding for the Blues through three quarters, but Whitman played just well enough to stay within striking distance. Kaylie Bishop connected on a pair of first quarter three pointers to put the Bruins up 10, then hit another with one minute to play to push the lead to 12 points.

The second quarter saw the lead swell to as many as 16 points. Burdett's three-pointer halted a scoreless 3:05 to start the quarter but not before the Bruins had taken control of the game. Burdett's three ball sparked a streak of hot shooting by the Blues though. She connected on another triple before Shamseldin and Stone did the same to shave the lead to four points with 4:34 to play.

The game remained close after halftime but an 8-0 third quarter run from George Fox put the Bruins back up by 10. Stonebridge nailed a three pointer to extend the advantage to 12 points and the Bruins headed to the fourth quarter seemingly in control of the game.

It's a quick turnaround for the Blues who visit rival Whitworth this Tuesday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
