Hughes Drops 41 Against La Verne

LA VERNE — First year point guard Maylene U. Hughes dropped 41 points against La Verne on Wednesday in one of the best single-game scoring performances by any Occidental women's basketball player in program history.

But La Verne got the better of Oxy in a high-scoring game 98-77 at La Verne on Wednesday night.

Hughes, who's been exceptional in her rookie season for Oxy, was 14 of 27 from the field, and 3 for 8 from three and 10 of 12 from the free throw line. She was able to attack La Verne's all-out pressure defense with lots of success, getting to the basket and the free throw line.

Hughes scored more points than any Tiger since Mackenzie Brandon set the single-game SCIAC scoring record at La Verne with 54 points on Jan. 25, 2013.

Through six SCIAC games, Hughes is leading the league with 23.8 points per game.

La Verne got the better of Oxy on the boards though with their frantic shoot-and-rebound style, beating Oxy on the glass 76 rebounds to the Tigers' 37.

The Leopards eventually converted their second and third chance points.

La Verne pushed its lead to 21 by halftime and was able to hold the cushion above 20 points for the remainder of the game.

Taylor Yoshida chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Michaela Smith added six points and eight rebounds.

La Verne was led by Jasslyn Johnson who scored 24 points.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in SCIAC play.

La Verne improves to 10-3 and 3-2.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action against Whittier at 4 p.m. at home on Saturday.
